Cleaning deposits out of inside iron and steam mops

I have village water and it leaves a film on everything. I have a steam iron and steam mop that has become clogged with these chemicals. How can I open the holes so steam will come out and how can I keep it that way. They both had instructions to use tap water.

  • run vinegar through them as you would a coffee maker. also there is a metal pin that should have been in your box for poking through the steam holes. It looks like a large stretched out paper clip. I would only use distilled or filtered water since you are having issues. good luck

Usually white vinegar will remove mineral deposits from *hard* water. Here's a tutorial for the steam iron. http://www.ehow.com/how_6971075_removing-steam-iron-deposits.html I have a Bissell steam mop and although they do not recommend using white vinegar in their steam mops on a regular basis, the instructions on their website for removing mineral deposits do include using white vinegar. I would recommend checking the website for the brand steam mop you own for instructions. Also, to prevent lime scale and mineral deposits from building up in the future, I would recommend using only distilled water. Some tap water is just too hard and mineral deposits will definitely shorten the life of your appliances that require water. (This includes coffee pots too.) A gallon of distilled water can be purchased anywhere they sell bottled water and it generally costs less than $1.00 per gallon. It's just 88 cents/gallon at the Walmarts in my area.

I used the instructions in the link, the baking soda /water paste worked great! https://www.realsimple.com/home-organizing/cleaning/laundry/clean-iron
