The Most Unusual Hillside Home You've Seen

Perhaps you've seen a home built into the side of a hill, embedded in the earth, but I doubt you've seen one quite as interesting as this one. Located in Vals, Switzerand, the "Villa Vals" as it is dubbed was built by Bjarne Mastenbroek and Christian Müller, notable architects who sought to design a home that integrated into the land without disturbing the beauty of the nearby surroundings.
Built in 2009, the house was built and furnished in cooperation with a large number of Dutch designers and companies, and it features a spacious layout and modern interior design elements.
Here you can see the outdoor patio area, which is actually designed to slope slightly upward, providing a great view of the sky and the mountains on the horizon.
An industrial style interior features incredible accents provided by a number of prominent Dutch designers.
This bedroom sleeps three, and is one of a number of nooks hidden throughout the interior.

I was privileged to visit a house built in a mound in Dahlonega, Georgia that was built by a Georgia Tech Engineer. This was back almost 30 years ago. It was amazing! He used "I" beams to support the weight and one drawback he faced was code demanded a back door for a second exit in case of fire...which he did not really like. The house was a half circle with the living quarters in the front and the service areas that did not require windows in the back...rooms like bathrooms, closets, washroom, storage. With the humidity we have here in Georgia, mustiness was a problem!
