Help! I have a very small ugly kitchen. I am on a tight budget. What can I do to make it more pleasing to the eyes? I want to keep my appliances.
I hate the cabinets and white wall behind counter and not to mention the floor. Any advice?

Hi Melissa, The cheapest way to change the look of your cabinet is to paint it and change out the door knob. You can paint the cabinet white or choose the lightest color that is on your floor to paint the cabinet. If you want to do more than painting you can change the look of the door by adding a frame around it like a shaker style door instead of a flat door

Oh I hear you on having a small kitchen & need to make changes....yours is wider than mine which will become a galley kitchen. I'm using 2 book shelves on the wall opposite the cupboards to be able to have room for appliances (will put doors on them) and have a roll out counter/table with a couple tall stools for chairs. If the landlord lets me, the cupboards will go white as well and that way I'll have a beautiful blank canvas to accent with just small splash of color from tea towels, oven mitts and canisters. But it took this past 2 months to actually decide on what would change the drab to delight. Good luck with your kitchen and put up a post of changes you make...would like to see them.

Oh my, yes I can see what you are dealing with. I would go fun...maybe painting the cabinets a light aqua? And the table and chairs white? or colors? It is so small, go for fun!

@Melissa Soult yes painting the cabinets would go a long way to snazzing up the kitchen also covering the chair seats and i am with @Bernice H go for something colorful and fun it will be so worth it good luck xx

Another vote for painting the cabinets. I think I'd choose a light jadeite green. It's a refreshing and relaxing color. Colorful fruit in a basket or bowl or a vase of flowers would be right at home in a room this color. Then, look for some colorful hardware for the doors and drawers. Add a multi-colored valance over the window using a pressure rod. Coordinate the chair seats with the window decor. The room will have a whole new complexion.

I would look for a closeout on tile at tile shops or Lowe's or Home Depot near you. Tile flooring is pretty inexpensive and easy to install. I would also vote to paint the cabinets and change out the hardware. I'm wondering if you can raise the ceiling too.

One thing you could do that won't cost you anything is to turn the table around! Keep 2 chairs backed up against the wall with the table snugly up against them and just move it out when you sit down to dinner or are entertaining. Also, I have seen many people posting about 'paper bag' flooring which looks good and is inexpensive - perhaps you could try that if you are feeling brave!

If you own, think "PRETTY" and GO FOR IT! It just so happened that the post following this one this morning has a stunning blue/green cabinet for a bathroom (it has just enough of a touch of green to keep it from being garish)! I copied it so you could see the color. The post is from a blogger named Jessica Hill. Coordinate with a pretty back splash in a neutral earth tone color. Paint your walls a soft cream and put up shelves in this same color above the table for extra storage. Note: use white modern or traditional handles to keep fingernails from scratching the paint. This color goes great with your floor! In a small space, do not use too many colors. Change out the light fixture to something more modern. You will have the prettiest kitchen in town!

I lived in a rental that was hideous. I wasn't allowed to paint or anything. I bought Elmers Foam Board, some really thin ribbon, and Rust-oleum Multicolor textured spray paint at Wal-Mart. First I primed the foam board then I laid the ribbon out in a tile design that I liked, doing all one direction then on top the other direction (I used straight pins to hold the ribbon in place by sticking it into the side of foam board) . I Spray painted the board, let it set for 5 minutes before peeling out the ribbon that makes the grout lines. I let it sit for 6 hours then painted the grout lines with paint I use for crafts. I also bought a clear sealant and put two coats of that on to keep it from getting wet.Took a couple of tries before I got what I liked. I then attached the foam board the next day with Velcro. I loved it and most people thought it was real tile until they looked up close.

I agree... Paint the cabinets! Turn the table so you have more walk space. Add some other colour by hanging a framed picture you love, also hanging colorful things on cup hooks under the upper cabinets is a great idea!

If you don't want to or can't paint, you could go the opposite and live up the wood by making a country theme - decorations, maybe a vintage style coffee set, etc. Could be cute.

Floor is fine. I'd paint the cabinets as the wood looks peculiar. I'd also paint the walls. Picture over table sounds great.

I would paint the cabinets a light color. With the floor and countertops dark you need a lighter color on the cabinets, which would brighten up the room.
