Should I do it now - immediately, or in the spring, which would end up being early May.

If you have at least six weeks before your ground freezes, I would recommend doing it now. Plants are naturally sending their energy into their roots now and you would capitalize on that. Water well when transplanting, and keep the ground moist until it freezes. Apply a good winter mulch after it does.

  @Mo It should be fine. Try not to disturb the buds! Be sure to keep them watered well. They love water and you will be removing a lot of the root system.
