I don't really know but would guess painting it the color of your room and utilizing the storage space - maybe put tiles on top to dress it up. Good luck!

"Wow!", does this bring flashback memories of the late 70s! I literally said "Wow!" outloud. :D
    • Kim Kim on Oct 04, 2014
I know me too. My parents had one just like it!
  • Pamela Flanagan Pamela Flanagan on Oct 04, 2014
It would be a perfect "bar". Refinish in whatever style your home is and fit insides for glasses, wine bottles, (racks where the t.v. is now would be stunning), and the likes. Very cool!
  • Jeanette S Jeanette S on Oct 04, 2014
This is just too fantastic! It would make a beautiful bar! I take it that the 2 sides have equipment inside that would leave deep wells when the "stuff" is removed...?? Take out all the electronics. Fill and sand all holes. Paint it a beautiful color (a cream with a dark wax would be stunning) and spray those "wire" inserts in front a copper or pewter...or.whatever color coordinates. Put a wine glass holder at the top of the center section with a limited wine bottle holder underneath them (you should be able to fit in 5-10 bottles using the "X" design). Then use the 1 of the side "wells" for liquor bottles and the other to hold an ice bucket, a caddy holding openers, strainers, etc. and misc items.

I love your ideas. I think this is what I am going to try. I am taking all of the guts out today. I am so excited!!!
  • Pamela Flanagan Pamela Flanagan on Oct 04, 2014
Ohhh, you could probable build an ice chest into one of those sides!
  • Sherrie Sherrie on Oct 04, 2014
I would take the TV out and replace the top so it didn't open I would paint it and make it into a sideboard or into a cabinet. You could even replace the top with tile or marble or granite. I know that is high but I have seen a lot of lot over time cheap,
  • CheryL CheryL on Oct 04, 2014
all white with mirrors in the windows ..
  • Allie Allie on Oct 04, 2014
a bar is what I'm seeing. add small wine cooler in place of TV. store glasses on side cupboards, permanently attach the lid.. looks like you could lay corks/ memorabilia in the sections on top, then cover w/ large piece of glass. Paint goes without saying.
  • Pop323719 Pop323719 on Oct 04, 2014
If you take the tv out and add shelving you could put a flat screen on top with your cable components viewable when you open the doors. This is an awesome piece!
  • Kelly B Kelly B on Oct 04, 2014
Wish I would have had this when I was looking for a piece to hide my cats litter box. Would have cut an opening in the end and used the front to place the litter pan. Would have been perfect!
    • Bernice H Bernice H on Oct 04, 2014
@Kelly B hahahah laughing here, my cat would NOT want to be the center of attention in the living room when doing her business! A good idea..but in my mind I am seeing...".no, not going here!"
  • Pop323719 Pop323719 on Oct 04, 2014
    Something like ..
  • Remove TV. Convert it and paint it to match any room. For a bathroom, it could become a vanity sink with new door fronts and new countertop. Laundry: Sorter with folding area by adding a new top and sorting baskets/hampers underneath and maybe some shelving for laundry aids. Bedroom: turned into a dressing table with new door fronts and and open area for a chair where the TV was, add a mirror on top. Or maybe add shelving and basket drawers for clothing/shoe storage with or without a mirror on top. Dining room: A bar or a buffet or with a hutch on top, it could become a buffet/display unit. Kitchen: island. Living room/Family room: media center with shelving added and TV on or over it. Workshop/Garage: storage unit with workspace on top. There's a lot of potential in that console! :) I'd love to get my hands on a few of them.

If you are a pet lover, I have seen some very cute dog bed ideas for pieces like this. Could be a bed, food storage and feeding station all in one :)
  • Lesley Lesley on Oct 04, 2014
The top of this is the issue I have with a china cabinet base. I'm still looking at it and haven't done a thing. I have a large piece of marble, but it is too short.
  • Rachael Klein Rachael Klein on Oct 04, 2014
I have agree with the dog bed idea. I would love to take out the TV and put a cute wire mesh or iron bars on the doors in the center. My little dog loves to sleep in her cage at nite. This would be a much more attractive way to keep her contained. I have made a bar with an old record player. I took the speakers out added glass and hung wood to slide my glasses into.
  • Rachael Klein Rachael Klein on Oct 04, 2014
Below is the record player I refinished in a dark stain. Now i wish I painted it, oh well. Next project:)

Remove all electronics, fit openings for shelves on sides, shelves/drawers/plumbing in middle. Rough up surfaces to accept a white wash or chalk paint. Leave "columns" black. Remove mesh inserts and replace with personalized punched tin inserts. Replace or cover over top, or maybe add sink to use as vanity, if space allows.
  • Deana Roberts Deana Roberts on Oct 04, 2014
I'm a rustic decorating kinda person...but I would use chicken wire and paint with chalk paint and distress it! Hutch or created hutch on top would be pretty
  • Christine Coiteux Christine Coiteux on Oct 04, 2014
Depending on the eighth of the console or if you can lower it at all, find cushions ir make a cushion gor the top , paint or restrain and make into a sitting bench especially under a window.

Would make a beautiful kitchen island..remove electronics, replace with deep drawers for lots of storage.
  • Lisa Falter Lisa Falter on Oct 04, 2014
You could take the TV out and replace it with more up to date TV, or get one off those Fire places that don't heat up, but still push warm are out. Either way I would keep the stereo. Good Luck!
  • Linda Whalen Gough Linda Whalen Gough on Oct 04, 2014
I love the idea of a bathroom vanity!
  • Esther r Esther r on Oct 04, 2014
Turn it into a mobile kitchen island: remove electronics, insert shelving in it's place; add legs & castors; sand & paint; in what looks like insets on top, get/make butcher block to have chopping areas that can be removed & washed, as well as serving as space for items coming out of the oven. Please post when done.
    • Kim Kim on Oct 04, 2014
Oh my gosh, I never would have thought of that. Thank you
  • Christine Christine on Oct 04, 2014
I don't know what your decor is, but if this was a piece I was redoing for myself, I would take the tv out and put a shelf in making two spaces for baskets. I would paint the whole thing with Paris grey chalk paint and then lightly sand areas where natural wear would occur. You can take that cue from the places that now show where wear it has occurred already. Wax the whole thing with clear wax and then mix a little dark wax with clear wax and antique the whole thing so the dark wax remains in the crevices. I would replace what is on the doors with chicken wire likr Deana suggested. Good luck!
  • Linda Linda on Oct 04, 2014
I would use it in a bathroom" add a counter top and sinks on either end and refinish it to suit your style. another thing you could use it for if you raised it higher is a fabric table by also adding a top to it. lots of storage underneath.
  • June Cotton June Cotton on Oct 04, 2014
I would take out all electronics make wine rack where tv is use top for storage or even add keg in 1 side with spout on top, other side place glasses inside or make it ice chest, then have shelves on wall behind for glasses

@Kim @June Cotton That idea is a fantastic one! I saw an old buffet turned into a beer tap/bar on this site not long ago. It looked good, too! This could be done with your piece much easier than the buffet in my opinion.

Paint it with "Old White" Annie Sloan paint...you don't need to refinish just wipe down and paint. Go on line for different techniques for finishing wax. Bathroom use to store towels etc. or in a diningroom to serve from and store dishes etc. glam it up!!!
  • Loretta Loretta on Oct 04, 2014
Oh my.. I had that decades ago lol I would do the middle shelf suggestions and either paint AS white.. or blk or the blue... the height of it being a old tv makes it just the right height to place a flat screen on top or hang on the wall.... Depending on your needs you could put book cases on the ends...
  • Meburke Meburke on Oct 04, 2014
I'd Annie Sloan chalk paint it,distress it some use her finish wax ! Remove tv,make shelf near bottom & place a set of faux (electric) fireplace logs& place your big tv on top & Oilla/.

It's difficult to make intelligent suggestions without knowing your style, colours, time period, etc. However, you've got a number of useful ideas already, so I'll go wild: steampunk it. Remove all electronics and hardware. Pop out the columns on the end and spray-paint them brass/copper, then distress with black to create a great metallic patina. Pop out the panels and replace them with 'ceiling tiles', either the authentic vintage tin tiles, or the plastic simulations - they come about 16 x 16 and can be cut really easily to size - in a matching warm metallic shade. If you like wood and have the time/energy, strip and revarnish in a nice rich cherry/mahogany tone. Otherwise, paint the whole thing black or a very dark chocolate. Find appropriate hardware - something Victorian for a subtle feel, or go a little more overtly steampunk with brass gears, skulls, octopi, pipework, etc! Stencil off-white numbers, spraypainted gears in a metallic hue, a period-style London address, or handwrite a gothic quote in white ink on the sides and/or top if you like the loft/urban/grunge/industrial vibe to come out more strongly.

Top part bar, with sink and a safe underneath some where.
  • Lisa Lisa on Oct 04, 2014
I would totally repurpose this piece into a wet bar, remove the TV and either put straight shelving in or a large "X" configuration for wine storage/display...Add some natural stone to the top and paint the entire unit in color/s to match your style & decor tastes.. Skies the limit let your imagination go wild!

My uncle had one and he uses it as a table in an entry way. Removed tv and added a door.
  • The Porch The Porch on Oct 04, 2014
I agree that chalk paint is the way to go, and definitely put a shelf where the TV is. Adding feet is also a great idea. Home centers have feet in a variety of styles with the hardware to attach them. I love the mesh door insets. I would replace the insets according to your decorating style; chicken wire insets for a country look with distressed paint and dark wax on the piece and turned feet, hardware cloth if you want to go modern farm house/industrial finishing it in a weathered grey glaze or stain with metal casters, glass for a more traditional look with a different paint color on the inside (again large turned feet), mirrors for a contemporary look with glossy paint and plain rectangular feet. Have fun. It's a great first project
  • Susan Susan on Oct 04, 2014
I would add mirror glass to the front panels Also, I just typed "stereo cabinet to wet bar" on Google Images and lots of images of cool projects popped up.
  • Patty Gonzales Patty Gonzales on Oct 04, 2014
That would make a wonderful kitchen island, if one had the room. I would sand it down, paint it (I would probably choose chalk white)...maybe rough it up a bit. Put new hardware on it, and put a solid counter top on it. Wish I could find one like it!
  • Adan Adan on Oct 05, 2014
I will take off the old tv and put a flat screen tv on it
  • Trent-Tonya Sharp Trent-Tonya Sharp on Oct 05, 2014
love it...i would reuse as a buffet or a mini bar take out tv use as a wine rack or put a mini frig in it for small drinks and put outside under a spot that it will stay dry but put a finish on it to protect it from dew or getting wet

I love the wax look, but if you are going to use it for a bar or buffet I would coat it with a poly not wax. It is water and stain resistant.
  • Kelly S Kelly S on Oct 05, 2014
Turn the TV section into an aquarium and a wet/dry bar for the 2 side sections. I always use poly on my stuff because none of it is old enough to need coats of wax. Inside or outside use decides which kind of sealer you should use.
    • Kim Kim on Oct 05, 2014
I kinda like the aquarium idea. I never thought of that. Thank you
  • Bea Bea on Oct 05, 2014
Was it a stereo ? Sure looks like one that was at my house. Your braver than me & more craft like- The best I could do is make it into a shelving unit. Could be very nice if you are artistic . Good luck - pls show us what the final is !
  • Kim Kim on Oct 05, 2014
Yes, it was a stereo, with radio and turn table.
  • Kelly S Kelly S on Oct 05, 2014
Just make sure that kids don't sit at bar stools in front of the aquarium because they like to swing their feet and kick. Irritates the fish and the parent who has to clean up the spilled water, or worse if it breaks.
  • Tammy Sweet Tammy Sweet on Oct 08, 2014
Make into a cool retro bar

I like the center island idea. That's what I would do with the right piece.
