  • We had almost a full gallon of Lowes Olympic paint, color camel, so I used that to lighten up the room somewhat. 1
  • This is the fugly brown door leading out to the garage.
  • http:www.kathewithane.com
I had painted the cabinets and baseboards white several years ago so that saved me that task!
  • I bought 2.25 yards of springy floral material, on sale, at Hobby Lobby for $11.00 and made a curtain to hide the water hoses and electrical and to give the room a little bit of whimsy.
A $10.00 shower curtain rod from WalMart holds it in place.
  • We decided to have a countertop span the machines. After pricing out materials we were kind of stumped until Mr. B had the genius idea to use an Ikea tabletop as a countertop. Whenever we go to Ikea I always check out the As-Is section. This trip there was a stack of white cabinet doors, for get this, 99 cents each! Perfect for making signs! I just used some drywall spackle to plug up the hole for a knob. I then purchased some wooden letters from Hobby Lobby, painted them a color that coordinated with the fabric and hot glued them onto the door.
  • On the wall opposite the washer and dryer, I used another of the cabinet doors to hang our jackets on when we come home. The cute checkered knobs were a clearance find at Hobby Lobby for $1.02 each! Perfect! Instead of wooden letters, I stenciled the letters on using a nice bright pink.
  • I used up some white trim paint we had on hand to paint the fugly brown door. Sooo much brighter and cleaner looking, yes?
Using a picture frame I already had, I created a whiteboard to hang on the door. The dry erase ink wipes right off the glass.

Laundry Room Before & After

We had to replace our washer and dryer recently. I figured this would be the perfect time to tackle one of my to-do's, paint and clean up the laundry room. It's not a big room, only ...»
6'x6', and was looking tired and worn out. It was past time to treat this room like every other room in the house and shine it up!

Hiding Unsightly Fence Areas

I was having a Graduation party for my daughter in our backyard. My neighbor had just repaired a portion of his redwood fence, but he used regular plywood, which maybe he didn't care what ...»
it looked like on his side as it was for him out of site, but on our side of the fence it was in perfect view of anyone sitting on the deck. Very unsightly for myself and my guests. What to do? I couldn't paint my side of the fence, as there was a short chain link fence on my side. So I did this...very inexpensive

1. went rock hunting (it's what I call it) at a local construction site (free rocks)

2. Free mulch (at the local community tree branch drop off area)

3 Lattice Boards ($8-$10 at local home improvement center)

4.rolled wire

5 Weed control plastic ($5-$6) or use newspaper (free)

Directions:

1. Attach lattice board to back side of fence area with wire, or what ever works best, depending on the fence your covering.

2. Rock off area you want to cover using small to medium rocks ( I go rock hunting on Sat-Sun between 6-10am when the crews are not there, as some contractors collect the rocks to sell)

3.Loosen soil beforehand, so you can plants before or after you place the mulch.

4. Place weed control covering

5. Spread mulch over area

Note: you may add plants and shrubs before or after you spread mulch. I added after as I wasn't sure what I wanted. I also added an Arch the following year.

  • From Lavender to Lemons there are a number of household items in your pantry and laundry room that can make great natural, economical cleansers
  • Lavender – Lavender essential oil added to cleansing solutions is not only fragrant but also acts as a natural disinfectant.
  • Lemons and Lemon oil are used, like Lavender, to enhance fragrance as well a
cleaning brass, copper and chrome.
  • Common household items on our shelves can serve a wide variety of purposes: vinegar, baking soda, borax, salt, hydrogen peroxide, lavender – flower and essential oil, lemons – lemon oil, olive oil, castile soap, & Bon Ami
  • Vinegar has been around for a very, very long time. The word 'vinegar' comes from the french word 'viniagre' which means, 'sour wine'. Uses include wood floor cleaner, window & mirror cleaner, mold prevention and more.
  • Baking Soda is a white crystalline powder (NaHCO 3 ) known as sodium bicarbonate, It can be used to clean surfaces, like powder cleaners, sprinkle onto surface and scrub with damp cloth. Rinse.
  • Interestingly, 20 Mule Team Borax was so named back in the 19th Century when Francis Marion Smith used such teams to haul borax out of the California and Nevada desert for his Pacific Coast Borax Company.

1/2 cup of Borax combined with 1 gallon of hot water can clean any kitchen surface such as countertops, refrigerators, stovetops, sinks, appliances and cookware.
  • To remove grease spots from carpets use one part salt to four parts rubbing alcohol, scrub going with the nap of the rug and rinse well.To keep wicker furniture white, scrub with a stiff brush moistened with salt water dry in the sun
  • Combine Hydrogen Peroxide and Vinegar to clean and disinfect wooden cutting boards.
Hydrogen Peroxide can be used to clean mold.
You can use one cup of hydrogen peroxide in your wash to brighten your whites.
  • make a paste of Olive Oil and salt to clean your cast iron. Rinse well and dry completely. Rub a small amount of Olive Oil onto leather furniture with a cotton ball to repair scratches.
  • Bon Ami is French for 'Good Friend', it was created as an alternative to harsher abrasives. This product can be used to clean from tarnish to grease stains. It's non-toxic ingredients make it a good cleanser for the kitchen.

Use Vinegar as a Household Deodorizer

I have a book of old farmers almanac type of cleaning tips and homemade cleaning solutions. One of those tips advised to let a bowl of vinegar sit out overnight to absorb unwanted household odors, like food smells, paint fumes, cigarette smoke... After doing some touch up painting I decided to give it a try...

Sagebrush Window Baskets

My poor playhouse needed a "fall spruce-up". The beautiful yellow sagebrush was just the thing for the window baskets. It dries nicely, is a beautiful color and is free!

How to Upcycle a Small Crib into a Stylish, Highly Functional New Piece of Furniture

My favorite part about this project is that an existing piece, that couldn't be used in its existing form was transformed it into a practical, functional and surprisingly unique piece of ...»
furniture. Obsolete baby furniture is turning up all over the place, and with a little vision these pieces can be upcycled and repurposed into interesting commodity furniture.
