can anyone tell me what kind of fruit tree this is? Thanks!

Can't tell for sure..but it looks like the fruit of a flowering white dogwood.... leaves are similiar too.. the birds love the fruit..they are soft can be popped if you press them between you fingers.. these seem unusually large, but It might just be the photo.. lowers in the spring,,fruit in the fall.. is Seattle, ours have mostly fallen off already,,

I just googled the Cornus kousa and they do look alike, although the CK seem to be a bit knobbier. I saw trees similar to the one above on the campus of UW, Seattle...the flower clusters looked a lot like lily of the valley and the fruit looked just like this. They had soft-ish white flesh (similar to lichee) but rather than one seed, it had several small ones. I saw the same tree on Long Island, years later, and the owner said it was a Japanese something. I suspect they are all related to the dogwood after researching things. (btw, I did a tongue-touch taste of the fruit...it was sweet enough where if I had known it was not toxic, I would have eaten it).

this is a white blooming dogwood I tried the fruit once and its sweet a friend of mine said he makes wine from it.. It is edible, a sweet and delicious addition to the tree's ornamental value. The fruit is sometimes used for making wine.

Thanks everyone for posting! I Think it is a White Dogwood, located in coastal Rhode Island. The tree is sickly looking to me, lots of dead sections. Might that explain the stressed look of the fruit?

I think it just needs a cleaning out of the dead wood and a thinning a bit.. they bloom nice. I am certain its a flowering dogwood.. Kousa. You might want to have it pruned and thinned by a pro the first time, then it will look like a different tree.. I saved one from my neighbor cutting it down, now he loves it, done right, it can be a foundation scrub in your yard..

it's a Kousa I had one for years, and depends what you expect from a tree. Mine was hearty healthy and alive, vividly colorful and the birds did eat the fruit. so cared for the tree can be quite rewarding.
