You can achieve the distressed look with any kind of paint. All you need is a piece of sandpaper or a sanding block. Many people are using chalk paint and milk paint (the latest "in" thing for painting furniture) but it's easy to distress just regular interior latex paint too. After the paint has cured well, just sand off the paint in the high spots, on the edges, or places where the piece would naturally receive a lot of wear and tear, like around drawer pulls etc. Start out distressing just a few spots and continue to add more until you reach the look you want. The photos below are a French Provincial dresser that was distressed after it was painted with latex interior paint.

I also forgot to mention, if your project is small, you can also use craft paint and distress it. Here is a portion of a "Hot Cocoa" sign I made for a hot cocoa bar we had last year at a Christmas party we hosted. I painted an unfinished piece of wood from the craft store with red craft paint, stained it with dark wood stain, used white craft paint for the lettering and distressed it with sandpaper.
