Best way to unclog a sink

I thought I had seen a natural way to keep your sink clog free but can't find it. Just trying to keep on top of it, something I could do once a week, or once a month.

If you are on a septic tank system, monthly drain cleaners aren't a good idea. For occasional cleaning, use a box of baking soda. I also use a screen that fits in the sink drain to catch any thing that might fall into it, and never put any grease down the drain!

I agree with everything you said and that is exactly what I do. Was hoping to find the option I found just as once in a while cleaner. I think it was baking soda and vinegar. But not sure. I use just baking soda now. Thank you.

@Donna Case Gentry Hi Donna, I literally JUST used that recipe 3-4 days ago! It IS baking soda and white vinegar, as well as boiling water. I didn't write it down but I can tell you where to find it. First of all you can simply google it, but I found it on Pinterest. Googling it will lead you to Pinterest too, I believe. My clog was SERIOUS, so unfortunately it didn't work for me. But it could for you. Also, a plunger (yes, I have 2 plungers! Toilet is ALWAYS separate! hahaa!) works awesome. I use it in the tub/shower as well as my kitchen sink unless of course it was a bad as this last one. Hope this was somewhat helpful, good luck!

A lot of people put baking soda down the drain, then follow up with vinegar, letting it work its magic for awhile, then pouring hot water down the drain to finish up. This doesn't work on every clog, though, so it's going to depend on what is clogging your drain.

I've read that enzymes are the way to go. Pour them in the drains once a month, let them sit for a few hours and then rinse. I think this is what plumbers prefer you do, they say the heavy duty drain cleaners actually make the problem worse in the long run.

Large pot of boiling water works great for me.

Use one box of baking soda and 4 cups white vinegar. After allowing it to sit for half an hour, follow with large pot of boiling water. I do this every month at the same day each month.

Also as a preventative you put coffee grounds with a little bit of dish soap. Keeps drains clean.

I found an organic enzyme product for use in plumbing at Home Depot. it comes in a powder form, as well as liquid. (The brand name is ZEP.) I use the liquid in my bathroom sink and it really makes a difference. I have also used the baking soda/vinegar/hot water and it, too, works. Good luck @Donna Case Gentry!

Our plumber told us to dump about a pint of cloryx down the kitchen drain, washer drain about once a month to keep ours from plugging up. Seems to be working. We are on city sewer.

To maintain my singspiel drains, I put 1 or 2 tbsp. baking soda in the drain, followed by about 1/4 to 1/3 cup vinegar. It will start to bubble and fizz. Let it work. When it stops, I run hot water down the drain. If you do that on a regular basis, you shouldn't get clogged drains,

I tried everything on my kitchen drain and nothing worked so we had to call a plumber and he ran a snake or whatever you call it. He went down 25 feet and then hit something but now it is clear. I think it was caused from a garbage disposal that was hooked up to the sink and it was not used properly. We never used it, so we had it disconnected. But my clogged sink is clog free now. I do use vinegar and baking soda on it though and it works great.
