My Dragonfly

I finally got a descent shot of a dragonfly. He was hanging out in my Lilac bush.

Google an image of what a dragonfly nymph looks like. The shallow edge of a backyard pond is good habitat for these insects.

Your dragonfly is so pretty & he eats mosquitoes, too. What more can you ask for?

Tina, do you have out breaks of West Nile Virus in OK?? That's always an issue here every summer and it seems like it's becoming more wide spread, coming earlier and lasting longer. I know if I don't spray down before I go out on out deck I am absolutely eaten alive!!

Susan, They report this our worst outbreak to date. There has been one reported death due to West Nile. Hopefully they are working on a vaccine because I don't see West Nile getting any better.

Whatever became of "mosquito control"?? Has every country in the US stopped trying to get rid of those things?

I talked with family in the Dallas area and they are beginning to fog for mosquitoes. On the flip side, appears it will also kill the bees:( Can't win for losing.

Darn! If companies can hatch and grow lady bugs and preying mantis for sale, why can't they do the same w/dragon flies? Or.........might a dragon fly eat a bee?

@ Becky. You can purchase Dragonfly eggs but it's better for them and you to collect them from a pond. There are over 5000 species of dragonflies and damselflies so collecting from a local pond assures you are not introducing a non native species. Dragonfly is one of my Totems :) and my constant summer companions, sometimes they light on me for long periods and sometimes when there is a fresh hatching my sea grasses are full of resting dragons glowing in the morning dew! They will actually turn their head to look at you :)

Kathleen M, I have a lot of dragonflies which I mostly see around my pond. I wouldn't know what a dragonfly egg looks like but I'd sure like to see some.

Sherrie here is some basic info on dragons but if you have a pond and you have lots of dragons most likely they will be there I should think, And google Images for the eggs/larvae should help with IDing :) Need a fine mesh net. I don't want you to think I have done this, I haven't , just know it can be and is done :)

My question is: Why don't the local governments release dragon flies as their effort to combat disease carrying mosquitoes, particularly in light of the hazards of chemical control?

Kathleen M, I never realized the larvae were aquatic. Now I will have to check the pond. I know what mosquito larvae looks like and use "dunks" to rid the pond of them.

Becky H, governments local or otherwise, never have and never will do anything right.

You're right about that Sherrie! I wouldn't mind seeing them take the tax dollars they'd budgeted for mosquito control and use it for this nonetheless. Otherwise, what do you suppose they're using monies from that budget line item for?
