Turning a Basic Bench Into a Chic Beauty

WARNING: FURNITURE WILL BE PAINTED IN THIS POST. Truth be told... it will be painted 2x. I found this sweet wooden bench at a consignment store and loved it. At first, I recovered the seat, but the wood tone was too light to go in most places around the house because of the dark wood floors. Round one with this bench was a couple of years ago, when I sprayed it a lemongrass yellow and stenciled a fabric for a new seat that would work in our bedroom. We had to make room for a changing table, and the bench went back to the basement. I dusted it off a few weeks ago to work as a seating area in a difficult pass through space, but I converted the slatted back to a more formal/ comfortable upholstered back. A new coat of paint and this gorgeous royal blue velvet and this bench is my newest love. It suits this tricky space perfectly, and the blue makes me happy happy like that Pharrell song.
This was the first version of the chair. I still love it. And I did truly love the wood, but it disappeared into our dark wood floors... that fabric is one of my favorites, but didn't ultimately work in the space where this bench landed.
I loved the 'idea' of this version, but it wasn't right for this space. The yellow matched our duvet cover and the stenciled drop cloth was... free. But it didn't make the cut when we needed to put a changing table here for our newborn daughter.
I was upholstering the back so I didn't bother to spray the whole thing.
I layered some foam with this batting and stapled it underneath.
I stapled the fabric as close to each side as I could and then trimmed the excess fabric.
To cover the staples, I used this fun bright green gimp. I love how it picks up the green from the rest of the room and adds an element of fun to the formal velvet.
That gold table was a thrift store makeover thanks to some metallic gold spray paint, and the lines of the table are a nice complement to the rug and the throw pillow. Thrifting for the win!
