Can a painted metal tray be used to serve food?

I have an old metal tray that I would like to continue to use to serve food. Can I use an enamel spray to update it? If food is spilled on it, will that food be safe to eat?

I have never had a problem with old trays but they could be sealed with a Zinsser product. I would put food on a plate. Check out this site:http://luckettstore.com/tips-for-spray-painting-metal/
