The longer hard-water stains sit, Monica, the harder they are to remove, so it's important to tackle them regularly. If the problem hasn't gotten too out-of-hand, a simple solution of white vinegar and lemon juice will help loosen and remove hard-water deposits from glass shower doors. Otherwise, you may have to go with an over-the-counter product designed for lime deposits. I personally swear by CLR Bath and Kitchen Cleaner. Make sure you use gloves. Drying your shower doors after use (you can keep one of those squeegees in the shower) will help prevent buildup. Good luck!

Try spraying rubbing alcohol and wiping immediately. To remove tougher stains wipe your shower doors with CLR on a cloth. This stuff is toxic, but using it just the once will get ALL the hard water stains off. Once it's clean, have everyone wipe the shower doors off with the towel they used on their body when they shower. Once or twice a week, spray the door with vinegar and wipe with paper towels.

Wow, do you Guys actually clean your showers...I am impressed! Good advice!
  • Monica, Gotta agree with James and Douglas. Vinegar and lemon, and then CLR if vinegar isn't enough.

@Patsy: If I don't do it, it doesn't get done! But isn't it interesting that all the shower-cleaning advice has come from guys?
  • Once you get your doors clean, do what we do. purchase a extendable shower rod and install a clear curtain inside the doors. This keeps the hard water off of the doors and the shower curtain can be cleaned in the laundry when it gets dirty. Also when guests arrive we simply take it off and the doors look great. Another tip from a guy! lol

Thank you for the compliment, stating that you are impressed since I clean my shower doors. However, I would like to point out, that I also know how to climb steep rock ledges, but doesn't mean I do that either. XXOO James

James...way to funny! All that from an Alabama Boy!

We have to maintain a good sense of humor in Alabama, being neighbors to you Georgia folks and all. (Actually, I have lived in Georgia longer than Alabama, and love it too!)

Monica, once you get them clean and dry, apply RainX to the glass. You can buy it at Walmart, Target or auto supply (CarQuest) and make sure you squeegee dry after a shower. I'm surprised the guys didn't suggest this. I have well water and using this technique allows me to do a "hard" cleaning on the glass only about every 2 mos. (the shower itself is another story as it gets scrubbed weekly)

I am definitely going to try the CLR trick. When we moved into our house, I thought the haze on the shower doors was soap scum, but I have scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed with every cleaning product imaginable, including an ammonia-water mixture. After searching on Hometalk for cleaning tips, I'm thinking it must be hard water deposits from our community well water. So, I'm going to try the CLR solution. If that doesn't work, I may spring for a new shower surround!

If you have tried everything and it still isn't coming off as a last resort try toilet bowl cleaner. It has acid in it. I wear gloves, a old rag and wipe it on. Then off and rinse. I do this over and over working in small area's. I also turn on the fan and open a window. A razor or a Magic eraser and chip it off at the same time. If you get this on the metal it will discolor it. The problem with hard water it etches glass, and even if you get it off it will still settle after you clean it. A easy solution after you get it clean is to dry the shower. This will prevent it from the future. You can buy a window squeegee and use it each time to dry the walls and glass. This will prevent it after its clean.
