updating a bathroom for $71.00!

This bathroom was in good shape but needed some updating. The tiles and sink were painted with specialty paint. The shelving made from clearance window boxes. Even the mirror was a DIY! Updating this bathroom was done on a miniscule budget!

painting the tile with specialty paint, craft paint, and sealer was a simple and inexpensive update to the dated tiles!

using clearance window flower boxes are a great alternative to traditional shelving. Mason jars (when filled :)) are pretty for storage!

so are you saying you added the craft paint to the base coat to get the color?

@Marg C. No...I used the craft paint as the color. And then a clear sealer on top.

It looks really nice but I'm confused about the tile painting you did. Did you paint it with the base paint then craft paint for the color you wanted then the sealer? I want to be very clear about the steps you took because I was thinking about painting the white tiles in my bathroom and the backsplash in my kitchen but I want to do different colors...not just a single color. Thanks in advance for clarifying these steps for me.

@Peggy. The white tile was painted with the specialty tile paint that came in white. The border of charcoal was painted with craft paint...no base under...just the craft paint. Then the whole thing was sealed with clear sealer. Does that help? Where ever you use color don't use the base (although it certainly won't hinder). Just be sure to seal the whole thing afterwards.

I wonder why you wouldn't use a primer or base paint before the color? just wondering :)

@Marg...probably just because I didn't think of it. Or, feel it was necessary with the sealer?? But, I'm sure it would be a good additional step!

Thanks Jane!!! Did you paint tiles inside the shower as well and if so, are they holding up to the water from the shower?

@Peggy. No. I didn't. I'm too nervous. I have a shower curtain that effectively hides that area. But....I'm planning on trying it. I am wary about the constant water as well. I am waiting to see how the sink holds up before I tackle the shower tile. If I am content with the sink I will do the shower. The sink is so much easier to replace if necessary!

Thanks for the reply!!! The tile area in my bathroom is the shower area but I've been thinking about painting some of them....just a random shot of color here and there!! The majority of them would remain white! We're trying to do some updating in the kitchen right now so it will be awhile. Good luck with yours...let me know if you paint your shower tiles!!!

$71 - you rock and I love the cute bird stamps on the ceiling! I decorated my girls nursery with birds & dragonflies (2 houses ago!) but love this graphic look so much!

How clever are those window box shelves, and how brave to paint the tile. It looks great.

What did you do to the vanity cabinet, from the pix it looks like a black border around the edge of the doors and drawers? thanks for the tile painting tip, I'll be trying that one.

Denise O I simply repainted it white and edged it in the same charcoal color as the tile. At some point I would like to add bun feet but...haven't gotten there yet :)

I'm back and loving it again. I really really like the look of the charcoal edging. The bun feet will really set it off. Again, nice job.
