Refinishing worn out wood floor

We have a maple wood floor that has the finish and stain worn off in traffic areas. With the popularity of hand-scraped floors, is there a way I can use a paint or cabinet scraper to get it down to the wood and stain and refinish it a few boards wide at a time? Sanding and refinishing the whole floor at once is not an option.
