Hi!

I recently painted my bedroom a very calming grayish blue. My furniture is all white and up until now I've used varying shades of cream and tan in the bed linens and in the curtains. Looking at it lately, it seems a bit boring and I want to add a little more color but I'm not sure what color to use with the blue. At first I was thinking a green but I feel like the greens I've looked at are too bright or too aqua and don't go with the calm and serene look I want. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

(Any suggestions for good places to buy more contemporary/modern bedding would also be much appreciated.)

Bridget, grey/blue is a lovely paint color. As per your description above, I suggest you do muted tones of grey/blue and then pop with bright yellows. red or green.

Take out the creams totally, incorporate shades of the paint color and add any one color to pop, like the examples below. I don't know if this is your preferred style but let me know your thoughts and I can give you more direction. Also, can you upload a current picture of your bedroom?

The blue/gray that you described is in the "cool tones". Warmer tones (in the red, yellow, orange and browns) will compliment it nicely.

I always lean towards a gray tone when selecting paint colors. I have never been afraid of using some color to make the space pop either. I LOVE the yellow/gray combo. Also...you might try red/gray or blue/gray. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks Yamini. I like your idea of more shades of the blue with just one other pop of color. I was avoiding yellow because prior to paiting the walls blue, I had yellow walls with white and blue bedding and I was looking for a new color scheme. Any other color ideas? Those pictures were definitely my style (esp. LOVE the london skyline pillow. I'm going to go search for it online, LOL) but I think those shades of yellow werea bit too bright for the "tranquil" effect I'm trying to give my ...»
bedroom. I'll work on getting a picture uploaded for you if you think that will help. Thanks again. I really appreciate your input and advice.

What about terracotta? It is not as harsh as orange but still gives pop & strength in a calm way. Here is a link to bedding that has a bed with terracotta shams & some gray accents.http://www.thepicketfence.com/bedding.html

I would suggest finding a pattern that incorporates the same or similar shades with white. If you want to maintain a calm space then you may want to keep it monochromatic, however mixing a couple of complementing patterns and throwing in a few different textures will make the room come alive. I would put the pattern on the drapes and on a few throw pillows and keep the bedspread solid. Place a texture throw at the foot of the bed in a shade darker or lighter then the walls. ground the space you need a warm color in the mix like a soft muted gold which could be in frames, vase etc. Good luck! I attached a couple of pics of some fabrics and the shade of gold I was talking about.

I love the terracotta/ soft tangerine that LeeAnn described. I used those colors in a bedroom and it is a timeless combination.

Depending on the exact blue/gray, a little pop of honeysuckle, Pantone's 2011 color of the year might add a nice ooh-la-la! http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone/Pantone...

I've recently re-decorated our bedroom with great "finds" from a local antique shop. Combining these new finds with some of our things we already have has given us a new look. I love my shades of blue with white and off white and warm beige accents.
