Cabinet Makeover Using Chalk Paint™ Decorative Paint by Annie Sloan

I was given this beautiful cabin from a friend who was moving her store to a new location. I had to have it and I had a vision of what this falling apart and damaged cabinet could be. There were lots of issues with the cabinet, the door wouldn't close (it was about 1/2 inch too big for the door opening), the veneer was peeling and broken, the veneer had been removed on the sides of the cabinet and there were trim pieces missing. With all this, I still knew it could be beautiful again.
I got to work, gluing, tearing apart, clamping and filling with wood filler. Once all this was done and dried, I sanded and then sanded some more...this felt like it took months. I took the door apart and regaled it, but it was still too big, so I resigned myself to the fact I would have to cut it down with the table saw.
Once everything was dried and put back together, It was time to paint. I gave the entire piece a coat of Aubusson Blue Chalk Paint™ decorative paint by Annie Sloan. I covered the entire piece with just a 4 ounce sample size pot! After the paint dried, I coated the piece in wax. I wanted the blue to stay in place once I added my second color Cream.
I gave the piece 2 coats of Cream Chalk Paint™. After the paint was dry, it was time to distress. I used a wet rag and rubbed the paint off in the high spots and on carving in the drawer and door. This way I was able to let the blue color show through without going all the way down to the wood. This was an easy process and I preferred it to sanding....a lot less mess!
After I was done distressing, I coated the entire piece in soft clear wax. I used brass cleaner on the 3 pieces of drawer hardware and it looked brand new. I reattached the hardware and the cabinet was done. All I needed to do was move it into its new home in our kitchen. I love how it looks against our newly painted dark walls!

Before and After
This is how the cabinet looked before I got to work.
There was a lot of damage that needed to be fixed. Some things were beyond my control, like where the veneer had been removed. Nothing a bit of wood filler and sanding couldn't fix.
Wood filler and glue were my best helpers on this project.
This is how the cabinet looked after one coat of Aubusson Blue Chalk Paint™. The 4 ounce sample pot covered the entire cabinet.
After a bit of wet rag distressing and 2 coats of Cream Chalk Paint™. I love how it looks in my kitchen!
The drawer and door carving really pop now that it's painted in this 2 tone paint scheme.
