Mosquitoes are the peskiest flying insect of them all.

Summer sure does bring plenty and every year there are more moving in on our territory. THere is nothing worse than being outside working in the yard in the heat and mosquitoes are dropping by. A mosquito bite on a sweaty hot day just makes me want to scream. Some people dream of the summer air while they chose to be stuck indoors to avoid the mosquitoes. I want to get you outside more to enjoy your neighbors and your yards, great communities lead to long lives.

Mosquitoes stay within a one mile radius of their breeding site. If your yard has been taken over by mosquitoes and you know where there is standing water around your house and yard, you're in for a trick or treat if you don't put a stop to the development of families of mosquitoes right away. Mosquitoes lay eggs in water, so a few drops of baby oil will spread and smother the eggs and larvae, hence killing them before they spread a disease to you.

Bats eat their weight in insects each evening, a wonderful natural method of control. A bat house is easy to design and build in an afternoon. The Bat Conservation International Org, http://www.batcon.org/ has free plans and more good info.

Bats actually don't do much to control mosquitoes. There are simply too many insects for bats to make much difference. Merlin Tuttle at Bat Conservation International says as much at www.batcon.org/pdfs/bathouses/MosquitoControl...

Also: "The diet of wild bats has been analyzed by dissecting stomach contents or examining ...»

fecal pellets. This research has shown that insectivorous bats are opportunistic feeders and that mosquitoes usually make up a very small percentage of their natural diet. For example, a look at fecal pellets for the little brown bat showed 71% small moths, 16.8% spiders and 1.8% mosquitoes (Whitaker and Lawhead, 1992) while the diet of the big brown bat was dominated by beetles and caddisflies (reviewed in Agosta 2002). Providing houses to enhance bat populations is an admirable activity for conservation purposes but it is not likely to help with a mosquito problem. "

One of the worst culprits for mosquito breeding ground is English Ivy. Any plant that cups the water, or holds water and/or does not have much air flow will be a haven for the beasties.

I keep several citronella plants in pots around the perimeter of our deck, seems to work quite well.

And when you are going to work in the yard just rub your hands on the leaves and then on yourself, no mosquito bites.

I'll all for getting rid of standing water but it has to be a neighborhood effort to be effective. Get your neighbors on board or your solo effort could be for naught. Also, and I've mentioned this before, fans are a great way to keep the little critters away of you're trying to enjoy an evening outdoors.

Interesting info about bats not doing much to control mosquitoes, I had always heard differently. Good info to know, thanks Walter.

A neighborhood effort to get rid of mosquitoes? Joe, I think we would all like to hear more about that. If there is standing water in pots or other places baby oil smothers the larvae and ends the life cycle. The baby oil is an interesting tid bit.

When I am working out in the yard I become a mosquito magnet. I put Skin So Soft in a spray bottle and have it on the back screen porch and I spray a little on before I start my day in the yard and it keeps me mosquito free and no more dry skin.

Following up on my neighborhood effort idea Kimberly. If you have a homeowners association or even several neighbors who can agree to do something about the problem, work together by acting to eliminate standing water and mosquito havens in your own yards. It is certainly more effective than an indvidual effort but not an easy thing to accomplish.

I like the baby oil idea! I use Avon Skin So Soft or the Bounce dryer sheets. Citronella plants and candles on the deck. Since the mosquitoes go to my husband first, I also get advance warning to protect myself.

One of the best ways to get back the pleasure of being outside in your yard without be run back inside by mosquitoes is installing a mosquito misting system or use a professional company to do a monthly yard control spray.
    • Monthly spray service get where the bugs are hiding and breaks up the breading cycle.
    • Example of the light mist produced by misting system. They only spray for about 35 seconds a day
    • Small misting heads placed around to area you need protected that spray automatically two or three times a day
