I have about the entire set of this furniture--bought it when we moved when I was 16 so it is now 40 years old! I have the captains bed; large hutch and topper; desk and chair; bed side table and a highboy. I am however VERY glad that I insisted on getting the "Pecan Wood" finish--as it has lasted really well and the slight wear to the edges shows as just aged and used wood (altho these are not solid wood they weight a ton!). The very few more interesting scratches have gotten a dose of Olde English in the dark color and then blend in with the darker woody streaks. The brass on these was NEVER shiny---it was meant to have an "aged" look so that is perhaps why yours only cleaned up part way. I have an actual 1860's Campaign Chest--a large trunk=-=-=with really nice wear and hardware that inspired me to get this set---altho I no longer use the set as a bedroom set! The desk is in our office; the bed is used by one kid; the bedside table and highboy are in my bedroom and the hutch is in my living room! A friend of mine has a different version of the hutch and hers also looks really nice after all these years!
