DIY Lamp and Peek-a-boo Lamp Shade

I did a lot of lamp shuffling and ended up with none in the living room. How did that happen?! Anyway, I repainted a lamp base bought at a thrift store, and added a little surprise to a shade I already had.

Lamp with peek-a-boo detail. The bird and butterfly are only visible when the light is on.

This was the base before I primed and painted.

This is the lamp with the light off and on. Peek-a-boo!

Donna, I actually bought two of these shades at a thrift store a few months ago. I used them on some other lamps that got displaced in the great lamp shuffle. :)

I love your posts! Maybe you can help me. I love old country cottage / vintage anything. I just moved and have been trying to decorate my living room which is blue, yellow and antique white. I want to throw red in, because red is in the rest of the house, but fear it could look patriotic!! I have never done blue before but always thought it looked happy. However to make all flow, I need red I think!!!

Kathy, I'd be glad to help! I don't think a little red is going to look patriotic since you also have the yellow in there. To keep it cottagey, I would use a lot of textures and whites with the colors. Could you put some pictures on here so I have a better idea of what items are which color?

Sheila, I absolutely love your Peek-a-Boo Shade!! What a smart idea - I'll bet you can't wait til dark so you can turn the lamp on and reveal the surprise!! No, the base doesn't need anything - the shade is the Star of this show!!

Love the little bird design surprise when you turn on the light. I did this during Halloween with cut-out spiders and again during the Fall with leaf shapes. I think your bird motif is wonderful.

Hello - I'm back again!! I never get everything said all at once!! LOL So, the more I look @this I'm thinkin it must have been quite a feat to get your hand inside that shade to do the stenciling - and then have to go back and fix a couple of bleed-thru's. Oh, and the little delicate ruffle trim is absolutely perfect on this!! I think I need new shades and a bird stencil!!

Susan, you always make me laugh. Yeah, ti was a little tricky for the touch-ups, would have been easier if my paint brush had a shorter handle. I got the stencil at Hobby Lobby, so you can go right out and get one for yourself! :)
