Making laundry detergent shaffo

I decided to make my own laundry detergent. I used 1/2 bar zout, 2 c of laundry soda and 1 c oxiclean (allergic to boxax). I melted zout in 1 gallon of hot water. Then I added the soda and oxiclean. OMW It exploded like a valcano. I was mixing in 5 gallon bucket and had to use several of my large pans (plus what bubbled over onto the floor in my frantic attempt to find more vessels). After it cooled the foam has condenced into a dense, foam. I have stirred and stirred and the foam and the liquid will not mix. SO, my question is- do I use the liquid or the foam or some of each?

Don't use the Oxiclean! Mixing it with the soda is what gave you the explosion. Never mix oxiclean with homemade detergents. Add it into the wash if you want to use it, but don't use it when you make the detergent!

You might be able to use the liquid in a spray bottle for cleaning counter tops, bathroom, and other surfaces. The foam, well, don't think that will be useable because it will deteriorate over a short time. You might try using it for an outdoor job - try it for cleaning outdoor chairs, table, or trim around windows. Not sure it will work for that, but it is worth a try!

This recipe, made with simple ingredients, makes 1 gallon of homemade soap.

    • 1 cup borax (freshens, deodorizes, and lifts dirt and stains)
    • 1 cup washing soda (freshens and deodorizes)
    • 1 cup liquid castile soap or Sal Suds (the main cleaning agent, lifts dirt and cleans)
    • 50 drops essential oil (optional for a scent)
    • 15 cups water (distilled water, found in any grocery store, is best as it doesn’t contain containments found in tap or filtered water)
