Bringing out the Ancestors!

I love old family pictures and have quite a few. We have this display in our dining room and it has been a good conversation piece when we have company. The pictures date back as far as the mid 1880's and up to early photos of my husband and I in the 1950's. It's nice to have the pictures out where we can remember past generations and introduce them to our children's generation.

This picture was taken in the mid 1880's. Since it looks like winter, we think it must have been a family Christmas picture. My grandfather is sitting on his grand...

Great focal point! I've got quite a few old pics to hang as well and was thinking of mixing them in with my more current ones.

love this....my mom gave me a BUNCH of my family's old pics and ive been wanting to do something similar with them! I've gotten as far as separating them according to sides of family, and her/with her mom, her/with her dad, stuff like that...I want to do some in collage frames, but seems like such an undertaking, I feel a little overwhelmed.... :-/ this looks great tho!

Thank you ladies! My ancestors thank you as well. @Angela, yes it does get overwhelming when you are looking at stacks of pictures and trying to decide what to use. I tried to do equal numbers of my family and my husband's family and also similar pictures. It's funny how people took the same kind of pictures, like the whole family standing beside their car. People were proud of their cars in the early 1900's! I also wanted the frames to blend so the pictures would be the focal point, ...»
not a lot of different frames. I painted a lot of the frames unless they were already antique looking.

yes! I have a couple where they are standing by their cars! And most of the pictures are taken outside, I guess b/c most of them didnt use, or couldnt afford flash for the cameras?? not sure...this has inspired me to pull my pictures back out and start working on this project again!!

Also, they didn't smile a lot in the very old pictures. I've heard that it was due to how long they had to sit still for the camera to actually get the picture. Guess they just couldn't hold a smile that long. There is one lady in my family's pictures who is always smiling. Every one she's in, she has a big smile. I wished I would have known her! Bet she was fun. Glad you want to get your pictures out. You'll really enjoy it.

Oh Donna, what a wonderful display! I have a couple old pictures already out, but have plans to add more. I'm decorating our Lady's and Gentleman's Parlors with family photography so there will be some there when I get to that job. I have the layout already planned. Actually have one grouping on one wall in the LP with just the "photos" that came with them. I thought it would motivate me, but it hasn't. My frames are all alike, but I like your mix of vintage frames. Gives the wall more ...»
character. Just like I'm sure your ancestors have. Especially the one lady that always smiled in her photos. That is rare.

Becky, your parlors sound wonderful. Will you put your husband's family in his parlor and your family in your parlor? Those will be great conversation pieces. There is a comfort in having the old pictures around and seeing them on a daily basis. It's also a great way to hand down the stories that you know about them.

I thought about that Donna, but I want some of our own little family in the GP and some photos in the LP will be other forms of family photography. Not just of family members but pictures they've taken.

Donna R, I'm glad Becky H gave me the idea to come over here and look at your home. When I saw this gorgeous display again I thought of a way you could leave them up and yet remove the personalized feel of family photos. Head to Hob Lob or M's and get some sheets of either parchment paper to scrapbook paper that will look well with your home decor and cover all the photos with it. You'll still have the lovely display of frames ...»
without removing the photos. You could do the same with the photos on the stairway too.

Well yes, it would be time consuming, but you'd still have a lovely decorated wall for your showings. Heck, you might start a trend if you post a picture on Hometalk! LOL
