Storage solution idea to share.

I've done this for my last two homes. Utilize the space that the beam going through your garage allows for. Used 8"x8" Hvy Duty L-braces (not shelf brackets). 1x12 MDF, and Screen bead. The screen bead is to keep items from vibrating off the shelf onto you car or head. Just screw the brackets into the 2x4's surrounding the beam, I used Durarock square drive screws, work very well. I can store all kinds of things from spray cans, 12 pk soda, extra tissue, whatever. Be sure if you have seams on the 1x12, put the seam on a brace. Be sure to get some short wood screws, to screw from the bottom of the L-bracket up into the board also. The brace has 3 screw holes per side, but only need to use 2 of them for this.

Good idea. I used the beams to support two "U" bracket made of 2x4's. I then stored wood scraps and planks there. They were easy to access and got all the wood scraps off of the floor. You could use plywood or large planks between the brackets to form a solid shelf.

What a great idea using screen bead to keep items from vibrating off the shelf ... I always get nervous when I walk under our storage shelves and see paint cans hanging over the edge.

This is great! Good job. I use this idea with tons of homeowers who are trying to show their garage in the best way. Storage is key and you did a great job utilizing space. Thank you for sharing.

love that idea I am going to show my husband. How to you excess your stuff by a ladder?
  • Clay B Clay B on Aug 25, 2011
Joy, I'm 6'2", I can reach most items on tip-toe. But a small 2 step step-stool is fine for my wife. Some ceiling are much higher, but most are like this one. If stuff below makes it difficult to access all area's; put hardly used items there, and regularly used items in spots you can get to easily.

Terry Haas, in 2007 we sold our Condo, the garage had this shelf system, and I put Epoxy with flakes on the floor. Made it nice and clean. Condo sold in 1 week. We did 'staging' also, from watching HGTV, it works!

Is that beam that is running across your garage a header? I have one and I have never looked at doing this, because I didn't know if it was sold all the way through to be used like this.

They can be wooden header. My home, like many newer ones, have a steel i-Beam in there. Then they wrap 2x4's around to hold on the drywall. My brackets are screwed into these 2x4's. The 2x4's are mounted with the 4" side against the i-Beam. If you use a studfinder, you should be able to mark every stud. If you find no studs, its probably solid wood header beams like 2x10 or 2x12's. Again, this is for somewhat lightweight items. I wouldn't load it up with 12 packs of soda, or anything like that.

Small suggestion - paint it so it doesn't stick out and look as tacky ,but other than that it is a great idea !

@Amanda, would have used white prefinished shelving, but was trying to keep cost down. Will paint some day when I paint the garage again. In the meantime, it's a garage, looks not that important.
