We have drain flies in our master shower.

We've tried drying out the drain, cleaning out drain with that snake thingie, flushing with drain cleaner, flushing with Clorox, but nothing has worked. My husband thinks we need to take out the shower and put in another one. Any suggestions you have will be appreciated!

The clorox .should kill anything in there...just don't rinse it for a few hours

    Hi Kathy,

Also clean out the sink overflow and back of the toilet, This is where I have seen them nest. As well make sure the seals or caulking around the shower is intact. It only takes 2 to make 100s... Good luck.

Is this a tile shower or an insert?

Well if you want a new shower then let your husband go for it. But to rid yourself of these flies you need to clean drain using bleach, then clean the vent and drain on the sink as well. These critters are drawn to the dampness and scum that often builds as result of sluggish drains. It may take a day or two for them to be gone, but your on the right track.

Also if you have any leaks in the drain pan on the shower or poor grout and caulk this also ...»

can be the source of the flies as well. the flies lay eggs in the film that is created on the side of the drain as well as any soft slimy surfaces that you may not be able to access or see.

Clorox will kill what is in there but will not clean out the buildup. There are different types of drain-o that can help as well. They are able to breakdown the organic matter in the drains in addition to killing the flies.
