Transform Your Room with Faux or Wood Blinds-We Did!

My wife came to me and said we were changing all our roller shades to 2 inch faux wood blinds (even though the word faux is in the description I can assure you the prices were very real). I quickly agreed to do the installation and the transformation was great.

Plus, the blinds actually work really well at keeping the light out of the rooms. This comes in handy when trying to put kids to bed at 8:00 pm in the summer!!

The directions for our blinds were not great so I decided to put together my own with lots of pictures. I wanted to share how I installed the blinds to help others eliminate common mistakes. Click this link for more info http://www.homerepairtutor.com/transform-you...

Oh jeeze, I didn't realize a kit like that would take such a production! Nice step-by-step instructions.

You always make me laugh while I'm learning! Great tute- I could never figure out the directions on those things- fortunately, hubby did them for me. :)

Great tutorial Jeff. We have real wood blinds in our home library. I was super lucky to find them in the perfect size on CL for just twenty dollars each! We were told they were installed in the home just before it was sold and the new buyer, who we purchased them from, didn't like the way they looked in their very old home. Lucky us!

Ours are inside mounted since our home has 2x6 framing.

I think I know how you feel Becky. One of our current tenants told me ahead of time she was going to install wood blinds and that she will leave them in the house when it's time for her to move. She's an awesome tenant and I hope she never moves!!

How lucky to have good tenants Jeff. My hubby and I debated a couple different times about buying an extra home to fix up and rent, but decided against it. There's no way we could do it now with all we have to do finish our own home.

Thanks for all the great tutorials you share with us!

I agree with the sizing on the box. Just bought the lovely plastic blinds from Walmart and had to take them back, again.....story of my life. The problem with these blinds is the 35 inchers are only sold in the Wallyworld 15 miles from my house, and not the local one. And I even measured the old ones to get it wrong......again! lol

Becky J, did you try WalMart online? They have a ship to store option, so they could send to your local store for you to pick up, no shipping charges.

We used those exact blinds in our living room and they look great. We did an inside mount, which makes paying attention to the "actual" size marked on the box even more important...especially when you consider the 1/8" extra you need for the brackets. They also don't tell you that when you top mount the brackets, that you have to insert your drill bit through a hole in the bracket itself...where I am convinced they purposely make the diameater of that hole just a tad smaller than any drill bit extension made.

thanks SheilaG. My trip was worthwhile, that's where the local mall is! lol. If the cat would stop breaking the slats, I wouldn't have to keep buying them. (I do know how to replace them, but one of the broken slats was up too high to even mess with.)

@ Leslie. Don't you hate that? I just had to do five roman shades that were inside top mount by hand. My arms were about ready to fall off before I was done. I had to keep taking breaks so the blood could flow back into my arms.

We bought our faux wooden blinds at Home Depot because they can cut them to the size you want! I thought the price was fantastic. If they get too discolored, they are not so expensive you can't replace them. Mine have been up for years. I take them down and wash them with dishwashing powder and bleach every few years to keep them white.

I agree with you Leslie on the brackets being a pain in the rear end, too. Sometimes I think the engineers just want to make you struggle, LOL
