Pulling weeds out of the garden..

I finally have some time to pull it out.. but I am getting there, I am almost done.. I still have to pull more in the back and around.

But did you see the huge difference? I took the huge bushes out because plants need more sun lights! THAT bush, was the worsts thick, strong, huge I ever pulled entire thing out, It took me 5 hours to take the whole thing out.. I never felt this more accomplished in myself! When my mom came home.. she was like.. HOLY MOLY! That is gorgeous without it! :) I applaud myself when I was done with it! YAY!

Wow-that has been a big job, but you were right. Your black-eyed susans look beautiful and strong. It also looks like you will have a pretty brick border when you are done, too.

Looking good Tyler! Remember that if you have a trailer hitch on your car and a strong rope or chain, you can remove a bush in about 10 minutes. We just took out a holly tree that was shaped into a ball but was leaning into the western son. It was 20 years old and over 8 ft. tall. Zap...it was gone. If you ease off of break and apply gas slowly, you will not tear up the lawn.

Nothing feels better than seeing the major difference weed and shrub removal makes on a garden............unless it's the long, hot soak in a tub afterwards to soothe the aching muscles. 8-) Yes indeed, BIG difference..........looks great!

This is what I love about Hometalk...you can go out and work hard in your yard, take a picture of before and after and all these nice people give you "kudos" and "great job". Where else do you get that kind of pat on the back? Sort of like having a lot of friendly neighbors, only better because we don't want to borrow anything from you! Looks great, Tyler!

Hahha! Awww thanks, you guys! I feel a ton better! There is still more grass growing AGAIN! So, in the fall, I am going to work on it more, such as putting plastic in the dirt so the weed won't grow again! So I am going to give a try to see if thats going to work. :) THANK YOU! I do feel a lot better! :)

Tyler, please don't put plastic over the dirt. If you have to use something, use a layer of cardboard, or landscape cloth, so the soil can breathe.

Tyler, try a few inches of mulch instead of plastic because plastic keeps the water from getting to your plants! Grass impeding cloth under the mulch is good too, but weeds will germinate. This winter, get the weeds out...put in glass cloth...put out emergence just a couple of weeks before spring comes to stop reseeding! Good luck!

Why didn't I think of that! I am still learning. THANK YOU.. Cardboard might be really easier because its free, I can just go to the store and ask for the cardboard box, and they will give them to me. So that should be easier for me, also I am curious, where can I get glass cloth?

Tyler, it's actually sold as landscape fabric and any garden center should have it. (Jeanette meant to call it "grass" cloth). I actually like cardboard or several layers of newspaper with mulch on top; the cardboard or paper will eventually breakdown. The landscape fabric doesn't break down but the mulch on top will and after a few years, the rotted mulch forms a layer of soil on top of the fabric and things will grow in on top of the fabric.

That is very helpful! So, I want to get this straight, what does mulch looks like? Also you can put it on top of cardboard? Should I start doing this in the fall or in the Spring?

Mulch can be a number of things Tyler, but most often it's chipped wood or tree bark. And yes, the mulch goes on top of the cardboard or newspaper as Ellen mentioned. Which ever you can find more of should work just fine.

    Pamela, Thank you!

I never thought about adding cardboard under the mulch! I will totally do that next spring!
