I love curbside finds. Recently I found a very large, vintage, wooden kitchen cupboard. As I always do, I stopped the car to check it out. When I opened the doors of the cupboard, I knew immediately what I was going to turn it into. When I got it home, I removed the doors and repurposed the cupboard itself into a great cubby storage unit. There were 4 doors intact with dated handles and hinges. I knew I wanted to do something with those doors, they were solid wood.
Kitchen cupboard before.
I left the doors in my workspace for about a week. I would look at them daily waiting for inspiration to hit. I moved them and leaned them against an old directors chair. That's when the idea of turning the doors into a table top hit me. I would be using the bottom half of the director's chair as the table base. I removed the arms and cloth parts of the chair. I then cleaned all the cobwebs off and gave it 2 coats of white paint. While the paint was drying, I got my hand sander out and removed all of the grime and old stain from the doors. Once I got a smooth, clean surface, I applied one light coat of Rustoleum dark walnut wood stain using an old tee shirt.
Director's chair base and doors....before
While the stain was drying on the doors, I went back to the director's chair and heavily distressed the white paint. I used both a damp towel and an 80 grit sanding block to remove some of the paint. I then applied General Finishes high performance flat topcoat to the director's chair to seal the paint. I then went back to the doors and did a light sanding with 0000 steel wool. I did this to lighten the edges just a little. I then sealed the doors with the same General Finishes topcoat.
My little table
I put four, flat head wood screws through the top of the table anchoring it to the base. Project complete. This is one of those projects that I really love. Taking unconventional objects and turning them into something functional and.......I would have to say, pretty cute.
