Why does furnace blower still run after burner shuts off ?

The blower on our furnace continues to run (sometimes as long as an hour) after the burner shuts off.

  • Depending upon the age of your furnace there can be two things causing this. Newer furnaces have a electronic control that delays the blower from shutting off until the heat exchanger cools down. The older furnaces have a mechanical switch that rotates and as it cools down it flips a switch that is built in. Its not all that uncommon that this switch hangs up. You will need a professional to replace this control or to reset the temps its set at. Its not an expensive part, about $70 plus labor. Its work having this done as the contractor can check everything else out to make sure you have a trouble free winter.
