We have a one piece toilet that suddenly won't fill on its own. What should I do? Can I do it myself?

  • You need a new flush valve. With one piece toilets its best if you can get the original type equipment. While you can get a replacement unit at most home centers, Ideally you want the one matched to your toilet Get the make and ideally any identification markings on the inside of the lid and tank, Take a photo and go to a better quality plumbing store. Do not accept a flush valve that you can purchase at the home centers. It will cost a few dollars more doing it this way but it will last a long time and it will work correctly.

Thank you so much for your help! I don't know what we Hometalkers would do without professionals like you on here!

If your toilet happens to be Kohler, call them for the correct part #. Our Kohler one-piece stopped flushing and we needed to replace the flapper. First part Lowe's sold my husband was wrong so I went to Kohler online and tried to follow their instructions for determining model number etc but finally had to call them - it seems that the fact that it is one-piece is something their online instructions do not address.
