Reusing cedar

I was able to buy a huge amount of cedar that was used as wall coverings in a house. About half a pick-up truck bed full. Only $30. So here is a bench from that load. Will be at my fire pit out back.

WOW Bob - what a great score - all that wonderful cedar for only $30!! The bench looks really fabulous - is the seat sloped a little bit or is it just the picture?? Post more pics when you put this baby around your fire pit. Whatcha gonna do w/the rest of the wood?

Yes. There is a slight rounding to the seat and then all edges are rounded over. The bummer about cedar is that the splinters can be quite nasty.

Yeah, that's very true!! If a splinter hasn't become imbedded sometimes you can take some really tacky tape (like duck that has a pretty good grab to it) and press it over the splinter and it might pull it out - at least enough to be able to grab it with tweezers!! Guess you better have a first aid kit handy huh??

Susan, now that is a picture, duct tape on the rear-end!!! LOL. I can just see you sitting on the bench by the fire, with a roll of duct tape around your wrist, just waiting to rescue someone's bottom for those pesky splinters!

Actually Donna - I was thinking more of the fingers when working w/the cedar!! "BUTT" - I 'spose duct tape can be kept at the ready for what ever emergency or body part needs rescuing!!!

Oh Donna, HOW does the mind wander like that...LOL LOL.... This is a great bench and I was admiring the "natural seat" of the curve...I just love that...Bob, as in my pottery...when you alter a plan to accomodate the natural tendencies of the material...You tell people that was your "vision" LOL to create a more "natural seat" for the "seat"....HaHaHa... What a great job you did on this! I'll remember that about cedar, I've not worked with any cedar yet...

Kudos on the repurposing of this cedar, Bob. The bench looks great. We're currently building a deck, and I was just dreaming today of how I can use the scrap. Hmm, there may be a bench in my future..

This is beautiful! Love it! Love the simple natural look, and it will last and last! There's just nothing better, (in my opinion) than a handmade piece of furniture to enjoy! AND, you can pass it on, in years to come! GREAT JOB!!

Great job. Wish I was there when you built it so I could learn to create stuff like this.

Thanks to all for the nice comments. And, yes, there is an older one beside that one. I made bird houses, three benches, and a few other little things with the cedar. And no butt splinters...all in the hands when working. Hate gloves when woodworking...cannot feel the flush. Butt duct tape on a crack? Sick...sick... :)
