My pantry is in the basement so I try extra hard to be organized-not so easy when I am not the only one putting things in or taking them out So it is required every Monday to spend 10 mins. or so putting things back where they belong and finding a spot for new items. I agree that organization not only makes it easier to plan meals or shop, but also makes ME feel better.
I have the same problem with others not putting things back where they belong! The baskets should make a difference, though. I put baskets in our linen closet and it stays perfectly neat all the time : )
For the most part I've had no trouble with my family putting things in the wrong place since I organize things by groups. Breakfast, Noodles, rice, baking needs, salad dressing and toppings, snacks and such. Canned goods are all together, some on roll down racks and others on shelves with soups and sauces separated in groups. If only I could get everyone to know the refrigerator is the same way. For some reason, even with my containers in there, no one ever pays attention where they put things in there.
I have my pantry divided very similarly Becky...Breakfast, drinks, snacks, baking, condiments, canned goods, etc. My husband has a tendency to put things back where there's an open space regardless of what shelf it's on. He did the same thing in the master closet. I finally labeled the shelves for him, which helped a bit.
In reading about you on your blog I think we'd get along great. I grew up wanting to be an artist and by 7th grade I knew it was in the field of fashion design. I started art school, but wound up taking a break during which time the Lord aimed me toward who soon became my wonderful husband of 32 years now.

Though I worked outside the home at times it was always around our children's school schedule including school holidays and summers off even through their high school years so most thought of me as a stay at home Mom so I carted their children to and from school too. I don't regret a minute of it though now I'm needing to "find myself" again.
I think my gentle nagging over the years forced my family to put things back where they found them. So much so that our son (when he was just a little guy) would pick up things others had tossed aside (usually aisles away from where it was found) while shopping wanting to put it back where it belonged. And ofcourse I let him.
I have OCD, most of my organization skills have to be watched, if you move it my mind considers it gone. We have limited space in the kitchen, and a slim pantry no wider than a door with 3 shelves. minimal items go in the kitchen/pantry, the rest is stored in/on an antique diaper changer i was given for free, in my back room. When i shop i take the new stuff to the back room, and bring the old to the kitchen to be used for the week. I'm also not afraid to use my freezer when space is short. Thank God for the Space Saver System!!
I took this idea and used those plastic roll around carts with drawers and organized my small pantry. It is so much more organized now! Thanks so much for the idea!
