New homeowner and I've never painted a door before. I'm looking for advice on what to do with this front door?

I'm told it is factory primer on the metal door and surround and these can be painted which would be great because I feel this entry just blends into the background. The primer/color is beige and trim is mostly white primer. There is also a white storm door on the front. What type of prep is needed (there are a few scratches here and there)? What type of paint would be needed? I've read suggestions that small foam rollers are recommended to use when painting for hindering non-brushed streaks. Any color suggestions? I've enclosed some pictures from both perspectives of inside and out. Thanks in advance.

I have a color suggestion! Check out this blue door by Peace Painting--created quite a buzz. I personally LOVE it: http://www.hometalk.com/activity/45944

Hello Ronica In regards of painting your door, it does have a factory primer from the looks of it, but this will need a light sanding and I would recommended a second coat of primer and then another light sanding. When I paint a door, I remove all hardware and remove door from frame. Place the door on a table or sawhorse's be sure to use some padding between it and the work surface. I prefer to use a foam roller and a fine brush, this will give you the best finish possible. Paint the front both edges and top and bottom.allow to set 4 hours. Then flip door and paint back. Many people will avoid painting the top and bottom this will lead to corrosion on all metal doors, and on wood doors should be painted to prevent water from soaking into the door.

I believe the door "just blends in" as you state because the walls of the foyer are painted the same color as the door, if I view the picture correctly. If the walls were a different color, matching the other walls, the door would pop out. On the outside, the beauty of the door is hidden by the screen door. I don't know how much you leave it open for ventilation but the beauty of the door is hidden from the outside. There are temporary magnetic screen doors that can be hung and removed in the off season. Currently, the color of the door matches the brick and blue shade of the roof. Personally I like the old red doors, http://www.homedit.com/beautiful-red-color-front-door-ideas/.

Think about painting the whole door unit, sidelites and all, the new front door color. It would also look good to see that storm door painted the new color as well. Best, Charles

I'm in Hudson's camp as I like to "pull" the door for painting. I painted the front door of our rental early this summer. The door paint job was holding up well but all of the wood trimmed exterior windows needed it...I got a gallon of mis-tint exterior paint in semi-gloss from our local Ace hardware store ( $5 ) I'm always looking for these great deals...this is $25 to $35 a gallon stuff normally. With the door and the windows tied together with this green really looked great. The old door was a dark lilac and the windows were black

I'd jump on a light grey to push the blues in the glass and roof out! The storm door should be white, (or same silver-ish special order color, they make all colors nowadays) but a full view door with interghangeabble screen to glass would really show it off...beautiful home, nice lines! JL
  • I like Miriam's suggestion of a blue door it sure will make your entrance pop!

A bronze colored casing with the blue door could give it a castle-y look and tie in with the brick. And paint the two downspouts in front to match the brown brick color. This will make them disappear. Typically, downspouts are something you don't want to accentuate. Ronica, you are certain these are steel doors? They appear the same color as fiberglass units. Best, Charles

Thank you everyone for your responses and suggestions. To reply to some of the questions asked: I am pretty sure the door is metal. I am a homeowner/DYI novice so I could be off but there are some small scratches in the primer and there is metal below. The door edges are surrounded with weather strip and it appears factory. So this would really hinder my ability to paint the edging. The door is primarily the blurred clear glass with lead decorative lines in black. The picture inside shows blue because of the sky outside. The front of house is grey based brick and blue architectural shingles. I love the suggestions of Blue door outside and perhaps bright white trim and side windows outside? The storm door is frequently used because there is a built in roll-up/down window to screen feature. Suggestions for paint type? I see the commercial on tv for Glidden (I think) brand that is no drip. Is that usable on metal doors? Thanks all!
  • Hudson has you right on track as to how to paint it. Just wanted to add that you should take it to a spot where it is not in direct sun and where things like dust or leaves won't blow onto it as it dries.
