I need to add something... WHAT?

StoneGable
by StoneGable
I need to add something above this bed, but NOT a mirror. Any suggestions.
The room is a neutral guest room ~ nothing too personal.

How about plates? Plain ones? You have lots of square art on the walls.. the round shape of a plate would be good with the arched headboard and is not overly personal.

    A couple of my favorites!

    More pillows...lol just kidding.

There are so many metal decorating pieces out there, i would chose one that takes up about 2/3 of the width or a series of smaller ones. They come in all sorts of designs and some of them have a bit of color...some neutral and some with a splash. Your choice!
  • Marg C Marg C on Aug 23, 2012
I like Sharrons first design :)
  • Ellen H Ellen H on Aug 23, 2012
I like TheMoney-Pit's idea of plates, with a twist - look at chargers. I'm sure you could find a finish and design that would look great in a bedroom. Many of them are purely decorative and impractical for table setting anyway.

    ...not too big.

I think some unusual farm implements would be a good choice. Like the ones you found in an earlier post. surround these by unique mir

    I like Sharron's and Ellen's suggestions.
  • Lisa Pennington Lisa Pennington on Aug 23, 2012
I love Ann's suggestion. I word would also look nice, something large and graphic but still not adding too much color or distraction. I have a sign over my bed and I love it. It's definitely hard to know what to put over a beautiful headboard.
  • Marcia Marcia on Aug 23, 2012
I think the room needs some color. I'd consider painting the walls a Federal Blue,or perhaps a pale green. Stenciling would look nice, too. Maybe a vase of flowers or a plant onthe side table.
  • StoneGable StoneGable on Aug 23, 2012
What great ideas! Keep them coming! Thanks everyone!
  • TheOldPostRoad T TheOldPostRoad T on Aug 23, 2012
I like color. Too much. But a quick fix, if the neutral has you bored, would be to switch out the front two pillows for something with some color. I can't see the colors in the duvet very well, but maybe an orange or citreon or green or aqua trellis pattern? I might stick with one punch of color (don't use all four colors!) Love your lamp shades! And that cute table!
  • Carroll A Carroll A on Aug 23, 2012
I will be the odd man or women out here, for me sometimes less is more. I like the room as it is. I don't think I would add anything. The bed is beautiful you might draw attention away from the posts if you has something hanging between them.
  • TheOldPostRoad T TheOldPostRoad T on Aug 23, 2012
Just found these neutral bedrooms that have one punch of color.
  • Maria D. M Maria D. M on Aug 23, 2012
if u want u could still keep it neutral perhaps a darker beige? not too dark.
  • Vivian S Vivian S on Aug 23, 2012
I do like it the way it is, but if you think something is needed above the bed, I keep envisioning something large, oval, and ornate. I can't get the idea of cast iron out of my head but that is bound to be too heavy. Here is an image but I don't know how it can be more appropriate as wall art: http://www.touchofeurope.net/20511/Rusty-Black-Finish-Cast-Iron-Oval-Doormat.html
  • Sharon E. Hines Sharon E. Hines on Aug 23, 2012
you could also hang something above each night stand and leave the space above the bed open. The room is very pretty. Love the wall color!
  • a few silhouettes would look fabulous! or an architectural element of some sort
  • Danielle B Danielle B on Aug 23, 2012
I would either add a short guest inspired quote or a great twig wreath. I like the neutral and see an earth element adding texture here.
  • Taunnie Taunnie on Aug 23, 2012
Maybe a big basket like a a tabacco basket, or a grouping of little basket bowls.
  • Sharron W Sharron W on Aug 23, 2012
Wow Vivian that's Pretty! But if it fell off onto a sleeping person, it might be time for a dirt nap...so maybe not cast iron...LOL I'm still digging the toilet paper roll art....

  • Lori J Lori J on Aug 24, 2012
What about a collection of thrift frames sprayed in a single color? I am seeing these frames, sans art or photos, used artfully all over the place. It would break up the space without being too personal.
  • Lorrie B Lorrie B on Aug 24, 2012
What about a big old advertising sign, or new sign made to look old, maybe a bed and breakfast... just thinking
  • Ellen H Ellen H on Aug 24, 2012
Lorrie's idea is great- Stone Gable B & B or Stone Gable Welcomes You, etc. Actually it could be new or old - as rustic or sophisticated as you want.
  • Pam C Pam C on Aug 24, 2012
a beautiful red pillow on the bed
  • Ally Ally on Aug 24, 2012
I agree about the silhouettes. They would go beautifully with the style of your room, and maybe do them in a pop of color.
  • Sally Sally on Aug 24, 2012
Antique looking plates would look nice. Brown toile designs or a mix of designs in a grouping of 3 or 5 would be my vote.
  • Laura K Laura K on Aug 24, 2012
I think a grouping of botanical prints, (maybe framed in distressed barn wood) would add a touch of the outdoors to the room.
  • The bed in our Master BR is curved just like that! I hung an oval tray in the middle and a plate on either side of it a little lower. Your room is beautiful! Have fun!
  • Kay C Kay C on Aug 25, 2012
I would add some ivory paint and paint the bed use gold to edge it up on there and some white lampshades as well then white table then a few pink and mint pillows or coverlet..add some color
  • StoneGable StoneGable on Aug 25, 2012
Many great idea... thanks! I'll make sure to show you when I decide!
  • Patricia B Patricia B on Aug 25, 2012
How about stenciling a welcoming statement or one of the available stick-ons from a local craft store with a sentiment (in a neutral color).
  • A black and white photo would look great there.
  • Other than the usual painting, etc. I love to use architectural items...have you thought about using some great tin ceiling tiles...you can use old or new..and then paint them whatever color you choose...
  • Debi M Debi M on Aug 25, 2012
Have you considered using one of the many wooden decorative signs? I have one in my b/r that states "We may not have it all together, but together we have it all" Not overly personal, but sums up how our lives are. There is one in my den that ways Welcome to my pity party. There are many cute ones available
  • Becky Becky on May 22, 2013
I made picture out of old shoe box lids and hung them with clear head thumb tacks. It depends on your style.. I used scrap booking paper, but you can download any image and print it out, then glue on.

Since it's a guest room, what about a wall decal that says something like "Mi casa es su casa".
  • Sheryll S Sheryll S on May 23, 2013
I would move the framed art from the wall on the right and add more to a larger scale on top of the bed. And maybe add a bit of bright color... needs a pop of color to my thnking. I hope you find the perfect touch that makes you happy.
  • Roberta Alessi Roberta Alessi on Jul 03, 2013
How about a print that has the bed cover colors in it...OR a black frame with large object in the middle such as a very large key or metal cutout.
  • Nancy Hatcher Nancy Hatcher on Jul 03, 2013
Looks to me like it needs a pop of color too. If it were mine I'd add some pillows or picture that picks up what looks to me like a reddish color in the spread.
  • Caroline Caroline on Jul 03, 2013
I would just add some color and forget about putting something over the bed.
  • Lorraine Edwards Lorraine Edwards on Jul 03, 2013
Personally, I love the monochromatic "non-color" in this room! It's restful, textural and comforting in my opinion. Because it has so much fabric and texture, to me it is crying out for something shiny and metallic! I know you don't want a mirror, but if it were my home, I'd seek out shiny metal wall decor, e.g., leaves made of a silvery metal and hang them straight across in a line. It would pick up on the mercury glass lamp on the night table.
  • Perhaps add an organic wreath and a sign then a beautiful, bright colored pillow on the bed.
  • Dee Dee on Jul 30, 2013
    Turquoise accessories.
  • Mary B Mary B on Jul 30, 2013
I love Dee's idea of turquoise, I also like ocean blue it is very welcoming & soothing! Remove the smaller side picture and add a large picture over the Bed. Picture Perfect.
  • Bonnie Bonnie on Jul 30, 2013
Something very simple.... take that rectangular picture frame of 3 in 1 that's on the right wall next to the lamp. Turn it horizontally and place it dead center above the headboard. It will look crisp and clean, and declutter the side wall. Lower the square framed picture to just below the bottom edge of the lampshade. I love the rest of the room! Don't change a thing.
  • Courtney Taylor Courtney Taylor on Jul 31, 2013
I think 2 or 3 different framed botanicals would be gorgeous. You'd get a slight pop of color with the vibrant green that would jump off the blue wall and simultaneously tie beautifully with the green in the duvet on the bed. Best of luck with finding something perfect!
  • Curtain Lady Design Curtain Lady Design on Jul 31, 2013
I agree with many of the others- a pop of color, or something shiny- metallic, or botanicals! I love botanicals personally! Love the mis-matched lamps by the bed too!
  • Sheryll S Sheryll S on Aug 05, 2013
Okay, I think one small toss pillow in leaf green would add some color. I still think you need to balance the room by moving those frames to the center. Also, take out about four of the smaller toss pillows..... okay, just an idea now..... it has to make you happy and all.
  • Patricia Thomas Patricia Thomas on Oct 18, 2013
How about a nice eucalyptus spray over the headboard . That would also help the room to smell fresh for your guests.
  • I'm not sure if anyone else has suggested this, but how about some antique platters and dishes displayed in a lovely pattern? If you used Ironstone, it could go with any decor.
  • Carolina Carolina on Nov 27, 2013
You can put a pretty shelf
  • Rena Rowley Rena Rowley on Dec 06, 2013
I would add a round starburst mirror.
  • Sus298400 Sus298400 on Feb 15, 2014
It is a lovely room. I think I would maybe try the wall transfer letters in a "Sweet Dreams" or something like that over the headboard. I'm not a big fan of pictures/mirrors or anything like that over a headboard. Alternately, you could move the pictures that are on the right of the headboard to "over" it and add a few if necessary, to form a collage. The wall on the right would then not have any. Just over the headboard.
  • Yvonne Day Aka Miss Ruby Yvonne Day Aka Miss Ruby on Feb 15, 2014
I would do a piece of iron work that mirrored the frame of the headboard. I also love your accent fabric and would suggest doing curtains to make it look like there are windows on each side of the bed and put the accent fabric as a boarder down the edge. I would start the curtain at the top of the wall at the ceiling. Only make then behind your side area stopping before the bed frame. You will be surprised to see how this trick will make your room look bigger too!
  • Nikki Nikki on Feb 15, 2014
I love this room, I personally don't think it has to have anything above the bed, but it would look good with something I can't seem to come up with anything besides a mirror haaaha and I know you don't want one I just keep picturing some type of round mirror, but I think its the vision of something round with a pretty frame I'm seeing not so much that it has to be a mirror, maybe even a clock of some kind? I'm sure whatever you choose it will look great as it already does in my opinion =)
  • Sus298400 Sus298400 on Feb 16, 2014
I agree with Nikki. Without seeing the whole room, I think it looks great just the way it is.
  • Melissa Hill Melissa Hill on Feb 16, 2014
I Love the bedding! don't change a thing with that! If you were to find something with a similar pattern of the bedding that you could frame that would be gorgeous. Make sure your size is not too small, so it doesn't look lost on the wall.. The picture on the side was suggested but that would look too small. I actually like it the way you have it. Great job with ths side table, and the rug. I love the look. good luck, I'm sure you will find the perfect thing.

Hi @Stoneball - how about making a design with wall letters - you can choose a saying or something like L O V E & P E A C E or whatever you like :) Please find a link to the ones I've seen - you can also get them in all sorts of colours. Love your bedroom by the way :) http://www.pbteen.com/shop/accessories/wall-letters/?
  • Accentuations! Accentuations! on Dec 19, 2014
Always remember the number 3 when you decorate. Three of anything,,,a color, and item, etc. So I would add an art piece over the bed with color you like...so let's say it's red. Take that color now and use it two other places in the room. A red flower on the night stand? A little red in one of the other art prints on the wall. This hint of color will make a subtle but noticible difference, Give it a shot.
  • 861650 861650 on Dec 19, 2014
Beautiful! Whatever you do, consider a pop of color over your bed. Something with some of the same colors you already have and add muted reds and purple and yellow. Maybe a picture or a poster of flowers framed and matted. Nothing too girly but a little contemporary. Check out posters.com. It may take a lot of time to find the right one so be patient. Happy hunting!
  • Barbara Aubrey Barbara Aubrey on Dec 19, 2014
If it were me I would remove the top single framed picture - it is taking your eye up toward the ceiling where as the lower group of three stops below the lamp shade and takes your eye across the top of the headboard - something added above the bed is only in response to that top single picture being so high - and then rather than the green plant or next to it something bright - something to put a bit of zing into the all the shades of brown in the room- nothing that is a dull color like maroon but red - not navy but a bright blue or aqua with yellow - a vase, or nicknack, an antique toy or water and glass combo or hang some primary colored tassels on ropes of various lengths mixed with a brown and maroon roped tassel on one of the bedposts.

  • Pauliegirl1 Pauliegirl1 on Dec 20, 2014
I agree...a beautiful saying over the bed...and it needs a POP of color (3 or 5) throughout the room, maybe a border around your rug? maybe change out your mats in the pics, small potted flowers, as Barbara suggested, a tassel, if you have a chair in the room, add a small pillow? Good luck, and look forward to seeing the "finished" room!! ....GREAT JOB.....BEAUTIFUL..... THANKS for sharing!!!
  • Susan Bott Susan Bott on Jan 25, 2015
A saying would look nice above the bed. Those are easily found on eBay. Also, I agree with a pop of color is definitely needed. You have the seaside feeling with the sisal rug and woven basket under the table. Maybe a blue pillow or seafoam green pillow in the middle of the bed?
    • Kathy Kathy on Mar 31, 2015
@Susan Bott A friend had a seaside theme room and asked for ideas for wall color. My bro-in-law and I suggested light mocha "sand" color for lower walls, then seagreen or blue above as seawater. She chose our idea, looked great!
  • Elizabeth Elizabeth on Mar 07, 2015
I think the room is beautiful just the way it is...but if you feel that you need to add something then try a stencil of something like "goodnight" or something that is simple and flat to the wall.
    • See 1 previous
    • Elizabeth Elizabeth on Apr 01, 2015
@Kathy Well Kathy you could easily add a pop of color by making a swipe of the red under the words from left to right....or add a red heart somewhere
  • Kathy Kathy on Mar 31, 2015
Lots of good ideas already. If most of your guests are family, how about childhood pictures mounted on colored cutout of their state, framed or mounted on an art canvas. Or have guests write a few thoughts of their visit for display. Maybe one Lg red flower and they can sign their name, where they travelled from and date of visit? Maybe a red "Guest Memories" book on a table instead. Too hard to reach above bed. Remember the DR. said,"No more jumping on the bed."
  • Judy G Judy G on Apr 03, 2015

  • Jeannie Jeannie on Apr 24, 2015

@ Stonegable - Hi, I have noticed that this 'thread' has been going on since August 2012 we are now 2015 and you have not managed to say a thank you to anyone for giving you loads of ideas! Have you put something on your walls - as it would be nice for you to perhaps say a 'thank you' to everyone and to 'post' a comment with a picture so we can all see what you finally chose? Obviously, the latest people that have given you some lovely ideas don't realise that this post started back in August 2012!!
  • Louise Louise on Jan 19, 2016

Agree that the headboard wall needs to be a deeper color than the rest of the room...get some paint samples and tape them above the bed and leave them there for a week to see all colors thru the day and into the evening...yes I would get those small pictures off the wall on the right....not put anything in that space until you find what will work over the bed....something to consider, an architectural piece such as an arched window frame no glass! there are places in antique malls to find such interesting pieces of light wood or metal architectural pieces which would add a visual pop to that headboard wall!
