Fireplace Retile

Our fireplace had a greenish marble facing and no stoup, just the marble flat on the floor. We pulled the marble off and built a stoup out of 2x4's. We choose a tumbled stone tile and a glass mosaic inlay and put a diamond tile pattern in the stoup for a little detail. This project took a lot more planning because the tile had to be started in the middle of the top of the fireplace to insure it was centered and the worked down on the sides and taping the tiles to each other instead of building from the bottom and stacking up.We purchased everything for this project from one tile store.

*Options I considered for this project:

No other options, tile was our first choice

*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:

Figuring out how to start in the middle of the top and then work down, instead of stacking the tile from bottom.

* Cost Comments: ...»

2x4 tiles $0.59 each

6x6 tiles $1.25 each

8x8 tiles $1.44 each

Mosaic Glass 12x12 $16.99 each

*My motivation to do this project:

My wife has hated the green marble since we moved in.

*Project Steps:

We visited a lot of tile stores to compare tile colors and prices, and looking at tile fireplace pictures online. After removing the marble, I had to build the stoup from 2x4's to get the correct height.

Advice:

Make sure the mortar you pick will adhere to drywall and the metal facing of the fireplace.

Materials:

Tumbles Stone Tile - $0.00

Glass Mosaic Tile - $0.00

Nice Good job, I realy like the Tumble stone. It gives the fire place more strenght. Like a coner stone.

The white band is a mosiac tile inlay to add a little detail. Its white, gray, silver and gold. The pictures don't really show the detail very well.

How large are the green marble pieces ? I love the look and wondered if they may be too heavy for me to install myself ? I have not ever done this type of fireplace,, but would like to try.

Hi pam, the marble is what I removed and replaced with the stone tile. If you are looking to put in the marble, I would suggest having help. The pieces of marble are very heavy and need to be glued in place.

The stoop really adds to the area. It's where I sit and enjoy the fire! So you didn't have to raise the firebox?
