Cleaning and rehabing your duck vents
*Options I considered for this project:
Replacing them would have ment adding new wood to an orginal pine floors.
*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:
No unexpected events came up during this process
* Cost Comments:
The cost spread out over several vents equal about a $ per duck vent
*My motivation to do this project:
I have an house built in 1930's. The duck vents were installed sometime during the late 50's or so. They are cast iron and a custom fit. They were covered with dirt, rust and lint.
*Project Steps:
Remove the duck vents from the floor. I took them outside were I removed the 4 srews from each end. I used folded sandpaper to clean each whole individually.Then I took the palm sander to the outside frame. I use primer to seal the rust just before I painted
Advice:
If your painting the vents a dark color, use a dark primer. Its easy to cover
Materials:
Paint - Best Value - $0.00
Primer - Best Value - $0.00

    Thanks for the timely posting! My home was built in the 50's and I was considering replacing many of my vents. After seeing how nice yours look painted, I've decided to do the same thing! Thank you!!

    My house was 1949,,,, painted several times and a mess.... I finally found the same size at an old hardware, known for all sorts of old odd things..,,,, got them, tossed the others..in a hurry to get the garbage out as I heard the truck rumble down our hill.......BIG MISTAKE.... openings are correct size,,,,but just a SMIDGE OFF... DON"T FIT THE HOLES in the sheet rock that connects them to the ductwork..PLUS THE SCREWS are a DIFFERENT SIZE.....about 1/2 of them come loose every so often, 2 fall out on a whim.. baseboard has to be cut about 3/8 in. still isn't done....2 yrs later..
