Low Cost Master Bedroom Makeover

Jeff Rayno
by Jeff Rayno
I wanted to turn a blah master bedroom into a cozy hideaway with warm colors, slight accents with family pictures and a comfortable place for a good night's sleep.
*Options I considered for this project:
The color of the room was the hardest choice. The tricky thing about color is this. It is going to look different under different types of light.
But CHECK THIS OUT: Lowe's has this section in their paint department where you can take paint swatches and put them under different lights to see what they look like. I take fabrics and other items and stick them under those lights too. You'd be amazed at how different one color can look, but realize it is all science. Light colors are being absorbed and some are reflected depending on the light source. It does matter. So take the time to work your paint choice CAREFULLY.
Our room has no natural light because we curtain it so we can sleep. A nice civil engineer put a bright light near our home, so our light source in the room are the curly cue lights.
The other tough choice is this...which family members are you sticking on the wall, and which ones are destined to remain in the old liquor box till you die. Now that is a dilemma.
*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:
Moving the dressers to paint caused our Berber carpet to want to shed some strings. Some folks just cut the carpet and forget it, but with Berber this can leave a huge hole there. We are going to carefully fold the carpet back in place and glue it there. This is effective, and it retains the beauty of the Berber fiber for the next occupant of this house.
* Cost Comments:
This was the simplest makeover I have ever done!
*My motivation to do this project:
I looked at my walls and went....Ahhhhh! This HAS to change...plus the wife said so...and as anyone knows. That's all there is. My deadline was January 30th, and I am happy to report, it is done Sept 9th. Oops!
*Project Steps:
I did not want to unload every heavy piece of furniture into my front room so everyone would know I was finally painting my master bedroom. I bought some cheap plastic from Lowes and covered everything in my room. It was quick and easy.
I then taped anything I did not want to be painted. The cat walked by, and she got taped. She hissed, but I kept moving.
Once I was ready, I opened the paint, and I stirred the stuff...and I stirred it some more. You cannot over stir paint. Most people want to get right to it, but do yourself a favor. Keep on stirring...keep on stirring. Once that was done, I carefully cut in everything. The cappacino style paint I chose loves to leave brush marks, so take the time to do at least three coats. It is worth it. I hate finishing a project and seeing glitches.
Then we roll. I don't care how cheap or expensive the roller is, you have to consider the splatter factor. This stuff (paint) loves to fly. Look at your hands after a few rounds, and it is all you need to know. Put the plastic over grandma's desk or urn and roll baby roll. This goes very fast. I put the headphones on, turn the music up, and get the job done.
When your done, let it dry. Get some blue painter's tape and find the oops spots. Hit them with a touchup brush, and your project is complete!
Advice:
1. Do plan to have all your tools and materials before you start including enough paint.
2. Do plan to cover all items with plastic you don't want painted.
3. Do make sure the color you chose is correct before you paint the whole room.
4. Do make sure you use quality brushes that don't leave hairs in the paint on the wall.
5. Do make sure you paint the baseboards first, and then paint the walls...It's easier!
Don'ts
1. Do not walk off covered floor areas without checking your feet for lingering wet paint.
2. Do not paint without mixing well.
3. Do not use ladders that are not stable.
4. Do not paint with a sprayer in a non-ventilated space.
5. Do not paint without proper preparation of the area to be painted. Consult an expert if
necessary. Be wary of asbestos in old houses.

Welcome to a night of good conversation, wine and fun!
The window treatments allow the sun to come in, or they will stop the street lights at night.
The TV got thrown out, and the area became a section for geneology, ancestors and an antique clock. I don't miss the TV.
Another view of the bed and pictures in the cozy corner.
Before the wonderful transformation, our room was just a plain room which lacked character.
When a room has no sense of purpose, it becomes a dumping ground for anything and everything.
A TV takes away from the purpose of the master bedroom. Every effort should be made to eliminate it.
