Repaired leak and valve in toliet tank

James A
by James A
Replaced toliet tank bolts, washers, flush valve and flapper.
*Options I considered for this project:
Calling a plumber was the only other option. I had the tme and decided I would save money and do it myself.
*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:
The bolts were almost fused into the nut it was so rusty. But it eventually broke. Space to work was a concern. I was under a shelf and getting under the toliet and turning a screwdriver above was dexterious. Also it was wet and ichy.
* Cost Comments:
Be sure to get a new flush handle, $4.00, if needed.
*My motivation to do this project:
There was a leak on the floor under the toliet. Upon inspection the bolts were rusted out. The other parts were old and worn.
*Project Steps:
Planning - Went and discussed matter with associate at Home Depot, then bought parts. Preparation - Got water clean-up items handy, arranged my tools so I could get to them easily, turned off the main water valve at the wall, flushed, then sponged up as much water as possible. Removed old stuck, ornery bolts with large screwdriver and vise grips. Cleaned holes well to assure water tight seal. Replaced tank bolts in much the same manner. Removed the handle, chain and refill tube from flush valve. Removed plastic holding nut with pliers. Fitted the new flapper. Reinstalled new valve in reverse sequence. Turned on main wall valve and observed as tank filled, no leaks. Flushed OK, had to adjust chain, no leaks. Cleanup.
Advice:
Do place tissue paper around base of toliet to locate leak if needed. Don't overtighten nuts as they will break or overseat. Don't rush you may have to contort your body to strange positions. Do use larger tools and greater leverage to remove stubborn bolts. Do prepare to soak up some water. Don't forget to seat the refill line firmly or it will come off and spray everywhere.
Materials:
Toliet Flapper - $7.00
Replacement Bolt Pack - $3.00
Flush Valve - $8.00
This is the Flush Valve recommended by sales associate and purchased.
This type of flapper worked well for me.
Replacement bolts and washers are all included in this inexpensive package.
Very difficult to reachunder to access tank nut. Usewd vise grips to hold.
Space was tight.
