Living Room Makeover

Vhbungalow
by Vhbungalow
This room has been one of the trickiest in my house. With the front door opening directly into it, the living room seems more like a pass through, rather than a place you'd want to sit and stay a while. Through de-cluttering and a change of furniture placement, along with highlighting the original built in features, the room is shaping up to be much more than a pass through.
*Options I considered for this project:
Currently I have my existing sofa and furniture in the space, but I would love to have a leather sectional that would fit the space really well. The reason for this is I have three pets that spend more time on the sofa than I do, and shed consistently, so having a vintage, lived in leather sofa would solve my constant need to vacuum my current sofa! If I did that, I would also mount the TV above the fireplace, to save space and keep the fireplace as the focal point.
*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:
I'm not sure how mounting a TV above a fireplace works. I don't know what happens to all the equipment (ie: blueray player, wii, cable box, etc.) Where does it all go?
* Cost Comments:
All the other elements were existing and/or hand-me-downs, so I don't have pricing on those.
*My motivation to do this project:
It's the first room you see in my home, and the most used space (after my kitchen) so I knew it needed to be addressed.
*Project Steps:
I tried to keep decorations minimal in the space, and make the focal point the fireplace and beautiful built in cabinetry. Right now, I feel like there's a lot of brown in the space, at least with the bulkier pieces of furniture. I tried to add pops of color with the great coat rack at the front, which I'd love to try and create more of a foyer feel to that small space.
Advice:
Do: Measure the room and decide what type of furniture would fit best in the space
Materials:
Sisal Area Rug - $100.00

    wonderful job, I have a 1949 roman brick home with the same entry issue. Most everyone uses the kitchen door, again, no mudroom-entry.. grrr. who trained these architects?

    Your room is shaping up. Looks great! Do you have room to build a half wall by your front door? Or maybe 3 or 4 decorative columns? That would help separate the entry.
