Guest Bathroom Makeover

by Lisa K
I removed all old components from the bathroom in order to include: Sink, vanity, wall mirror, towel racks, light fixture, wallpaper, border, quarter round and borders toilet, Vinyl Floor, and sub floor. Everything was replaced with new items. The bathroom was 7' X 7'. I used a Miter Saw for the molding and side paneling around the vanity. I purchased everything from Homedepot except the wallpaper and Border. I rented a nail gun from Home Depot for the sub-flooring and panels. removing the wallpaper was very tedious and took much longer than I anticipated. I didn't have the right cutting tool for the tiles and had to go back to home depot to ask them what tile worked best for the trafficmaster tiles
*Options I considered for this project:
initially I was going to paint the walls. After looking at some décor magazines I decided on washable wallpaper. There were so many floor tiles to choose from including ceramic. the traffic master self-adhesive tiles were very durable, waterproof and easy to install
*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:
when I removed the old floor tile I discover part of the sub flooring was molded and eroded.
Removing the wallpaper was more difficult than I anticipated and getting the wall smoothed and prepped
* Cost Comments:
I paid a handy man to install lighting fixture $40.00
*My motivation to do this project:
I am trying to reduce my water bill by replacingall toilets with a more efficient one. Also, the wallpaper was from the 70's....ugly big flower print. The vanity was warped from years of water
*Project Steps:
I researched the best floor tile and wallpaper for a bathroom, I compared various toilets for efficiency and rebate eligiblity
1. I used a wallpaper steamer to remove the old wallpaper.
2. Scraped excess wallpaper off the walls
3. Remove quarter round and molding from floor base
4. Removed all electrical fixtures
5. Removed sink from vanity
6. Removed vanity bolts from wall and then vanity
7. Removed old vinyl flooring and rotted/moldy sub flooring
8. Removed Old Toilet and covered hole in the floor with a piece of wood to keep nitrous gasses from filling the bathroom
9. Cut to size and replace small piece of sub-flooring (3x3'that was rotted with nail gun
10. Apply new wallpaper and border
11. Replace air vent with new color coordinated vent
12. Clean & smooth floor very well , then Install new Trafficmaster Ceramica Shasta floor tiles
13. Cut to size and replace quarter round
14. Apply with wall glue and air gun – wood color panel strips around the back of wall behind vanity
15. Replace vanity, sink and fixtures.
16. Replace all electrical outlets, light fixture and light switches
17. Install new towel racks
18. Replaced old toilet with KOHLER Cimarron. Trafficmaster Ceramica Shasta vinyl tile was used for the new floor
19. Replace door and door fixtures
Advice:
Don't forget to cover the hole after toilet removal
Draw cut shape on back of tiles for corners and shaped edges before cutting
Measure quarter round precisely before cutting
Make sure bring measurement/size of old toilet with you for new purchase
Turn power off before replacing electrical fixtures
Make sure the floor is clean and smooth before replacing new tile
