Installing a multi-functional area.
*Options I considered for this project:
What were we going to use this area for? Do we want refrigeration or a sink? (man fridge that is) Should the cabinets go all the way up or should we make a counter top?
*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:
There was an electrical outlet and phone jack on the back splash, which did not meet wife code, so they had to be relocated prior to installation.
*My motivation to do this project:
Wife wanted it, seroiusly. We had an empty space between the breakfast and kitchen area there was an eight foot wall were you could put furniture. Your kitchen can never be big enough, saids who? so we decided to put cabinets to utilize the wall more efficiently.
*Project Steps:
Using Computer Aided Design, I drew a layout of the important items to us. We bought a wine (beer) and beverage cooler from Home Depot, which had to be incorporated and centered along the wall. I decided to buy cabinets in a box from IKEA and install them myself. I ordered granite from a local granite manufacturer and they delivered it with installation.
Advice:
By assembling the cabinets, I saved a lot of $$$. They came with lots of options which made them custom in their own way. Ordering from local manufacturers can also save you from the middle man.
Materials:
IKEA Cabinets - $1500.00
Wine Cooler & Beverage Cooler - $600.00
Granite Counter Top - $500.00

That is the oven. I posted some pictures of the rest of the kitchen. The new cabinet is in between the kitchen and breakfast area. I used a different color cabinet for contrast. It is part of the kitchen but not. Our original countertops are a solid service with caramel colored spots. I wanted to keep some kind of harmony, that’s how we came up with the color selections.
