Hardwood Stairs

Never know what surprises lay in our homes. The arrangement of the stairs goes like this: 6 treads are wood, 5 carpeted treads, a carpet landing then 3 more carpeted treads. Installing new treads would be labor some and expensive.
*My motivation to do this project:
I'm all about getting rid of germ holding carpet and the stairs are hard to vacuum.

Hey, can I wood putty the crack and give a good sanding or will this look too obvious?
