Difficult to identify from the picture. Can you get a longer shot maybe?

Without a better picture and judging solely because you live in North Carolina, I'd say you have a Pyracantha. It's also known as Friethorn. The branches have very long sharp thorns and produce red berries at some point in their live cycle. Take a cutting of it to your local extension office or to a knowledgeable gardener. You should get a more definitive answer from them.

Pyracantha (fire thorn) it is. Sorry you were injured, but this bush can look really beautiful in the fall. Shape it back and enjoy. Linda@Wetcreek Blog

Usually red berries are a sign to the birds that they are edible through the winter, so please don't trim them, especially in States where it snows. If you need to shape them do it after winter has passed.

If the berries are from bittersweet the the thrones are from a Hawthrone bush. They have 2" to 3" thrones.

Agree with those who love this nasty thorny shrub. The limbs and entire plant is covered and when poked yes it hurts, having said this, the pros far out weighs the cons . It changes colors and can be shaped into any shape your imagination allows. And they are important for local Eco systems.

Thanks so much for your replies! There was not one leaf on the tree, just bittersweet wrapped around it is reason I had to cut the branch to get it home. It could be either of these trees as I do find red berries around the forest, just not on tis tree attached. I thought they were from strawberry bush though. Photo is of the strawberry bush I find seed pods from.

Excellent to plant near the windows of your home to keep out would-be burglars. :)
