Small Kitchen Makeover

Completed for a Client.

Very small kitchen in a basement apartment was expanded by stealing space from the next door bedroom / closet area.

*My motivation to do this project:

Space was so small it was problematic to use.

With the simple addition of some space from the other room. This kitchen is now a "working" kitchen. This was one of the most dramatic remodels I have completed.

*Project Steps:

Demo old kitchen

demo old closet and corner in bedroom

rework plumb + electric ...»

Frame new wall with door

tile + dry wall

add cabinets

tile counters

Tile floor

Kitchen had some "work around" areas like the wholes house's water heater and the water main. Relocating those would have been cost prohibitive.

I'm curious about this project. Why didn't you move the stove? Having no counter space next to the stove or the sink seems awfully inconvenient.

The wall behind the sink and stove contain the plumbing and 220 for the stove. this area was a former laundry space. The wall to the right of the water heater is a concrete wall. The tenant has been living in the old kitchen for 14 years and getting by with no space, I could have moved the stove to the other wall, but the owner decided to keep it were it was...pulling the water heater would have taken down the whole house's water for longer than he ws willing to do. I did move the sink drain and the 220 some to allow for better use.

I agree with Steve on the "space beside the stove part"... Maybe a single sink with some counter space beside the stove?

Kevin, This is amazing how you turned that nook and corner into something 'livable'

That's right, sometimes you just have to work with what you got.

kevin, I know you are a pro and you do good work. I figured you had a good reason you couldn't move the 220 outlet. Even without counter space by the stove and sink, you made a vast improvement in the kitchen's usefulness. Nice work.

The long term tenant insisted on a dishwasher and a full sized sink, these two items were never in the original space, so it took some creative solutions to fit them in. In the original kitchen to the left of the stove there was a small bump out in the wall. Removing that allowed the potential to add a normal 30" range in the future. One thing that is not pictured is stereo speakers that were mounted in the ceiling, these are tied in to the tenants stereo system located inthe living ...»
    room.

In the last pic you can also see how the floor was leveled to accompdate the new tile, there is a floor drain located just infront of the dishwasher....this drain sits about an inch below the tile. About 150 pounds of level quick was used to get the room flat.

Looking a the before shot, I may have turned around and left. What a transformation! You do good work KMS. Was there any living space left in the basement, or did a most of it go to enlarging the kitchen?
