Pergola

Stacy
by Stacy
My back patio and backyard is very plain. There is no architectural interest.
*My motivation to do this project:
I would like my yard to stand out from the other homes and I would spend more time there if it was useful and beautiful.
It's just a plain patio, no awning or anything.
I would like to use my patio much more than I do now, but it's too hot to use it much.
This is what I would like the finished product to look like.

If the top of the pergola is built with close spaced beams or topped with a lattice...you will have a cooler shady spot with out having to wait for the plants to catch up. On thing that is used a lot in the desert southwest are misters...these are a bit like sprayers that keep the veggies looking nice in the supermarket but produce a super fine mist. Evaporative cooling can drop the temps down nicely. In the desert the can cool a patio by 20 degrees or so...they might not work as well in a humid climate but out here they rock.

Well, sounds like a lot of great advice. Love the misting idea. They have fans that attach to the hose. This is great in the summer. I have wondered if there is an outdoor fan, one that can be placed under a pergola. Does anyone know? This is a fairly quick project. My husband and I built two. Just plan ahead and have all materials ready to go. The hardest part I think would be digging the holes. One Friday evening we set the columns by morning we were ready to build. Staining is done after the wood airs out. I can see you enjoying your patio very soon.
