It's always a good idea, in the design stage, to get your daughters influence and likes to incorporate these into the design. Then head to your local book store chain to get some magazines with idea you both can agree on.
One good thing is that a lot of paint stores and the big box stores sell small samples of paint. When we were going to do my kids rooms, we ended up just using the paint samples and some paint I had left over from other jobs. We got them involved too. You and your daughter can explore a lot of options without spending a lot.
Kathy, there are some nice decals you can incorporate in the space. Not really pertaining to TEEN girls, but i usually like to design a space 'timeless' with glimpses as past present and the future.
