L shaped Walnut Slab desk

Working on for a client...Starting with large thick walnut slabs from a local sawyer. First step was jointing a flat edge and gluing up the three main boards. Surface was flattened using old world tools and techniques...(my power planer can not handle 40" stock)

Next up rip and joint the remaining slabs for the narrower return part of the L shape.

stay tuned for more progress

Got this installed last week at the clients home

Is this a native species of walnut from Colorado? what other furniture pieces do you produce.

The wood is American Black Walnut, the sawyer cuts alot of "urban" wood from the lower elevations of the front range.

In my neighbor hood, we have spruce, aspen, fir, and lodgepole...no real hardwoods to speak of.

I build all type of furniture...rustic log, slab stuff like this to contemporary modern, and traditional cabinetry. This is all on top of my carpentry and flooring and tile work.

My guess is its Just plain ol' juglans Nigra...American or eastern black walnut.

Its air dried...which unlike a lot of commercial black walnut lumber is often "steamed" to darken some of the sap wood. When air dried the wood retains a lot more of its character...these slabs were hand picked for the awesome "crotch" figure.

KMS Woodworks Kevin... this is gorgeous! If all wood furniture looked like this, yes, it would be a shame to paint it! Wow! I have not seen anything like this!

Thom Cincotta Custom Renovation & Repair, LLC I picked up a handheld dewalt power planner as part of this project..not quite as elegant as the Lie Nielsen's and lot noiser but it removes the high spots quickly.

Word. We've been using the Makita power planers on a framing job (decided to go to school for carpentering...). They make quick work of rough planing. I was looking at a No. 8 Stanley Sweetheart at a tool sale and this old timer tells me, "you'll only use that thing once." I figure that if I'm ever going to need to smooth out large slabs like that you really need the larger reference face.
