There were pet accidents over the years but we always tried to clean up ASAP. If anything went through the carpet and padding, what's the remedy for the sub floor?

For small and random spots try Nature's Miracle. It probably won't remove the stain but will neutralize the odor.

Open all the windows and doors and pour household bleach on the floor. This is hazardous to breathe but the reaction is fast. The combo if bleach with the ammonia from the pet stains will create "mustard Gas" but all your smell will just simply blow out the windows. 30 minutes and you don't ever have to worry about it. Nature's miracle is expensive and I don't always feel like it gets the job done (residual odor) and it doesn't clean. This is cheap fast and foolproof where bleaching of color isn't an issue!

Anti-Icky Poo (stupid name; great product) will degrade the organic material, but you might need to sand down the sub-floor if it is porous. If not, Anti-icky poo should do it.

After all the cleaning, seal the floor with a cement sealer. I had this problem many years ago and it worked very well.

We had this same issue and, like you, we were always diligent to clean up immediately after the mishaps. Ours were from cats, so you know how bad that smells - forever! I agree with the household bleach method, in fact that's exactly what we did. The room in the basement had cement under the carpet, upstairs we replaced carpet with new carpet, and in the dining room, replaced carpet with wood flooring. We used bleach for any spots that showed and it worked great. We have no issues anymore with old smells. The bleach caused the particle board under the carpet to swell slightly, but a little sanding of those spots smoothed it right out.

As long as the subfloor is not rotted (which I have seen before from pets), then you can simply just make sure floor dries and pour and roll primer on the floor to seal the subfloor from any odors and stains. I had to do this with our current home because the previous owner let the animals use the floors. It was disgusting and so it took several cans but all floors upstairs were sealed. check out the oops paint at your local Lowes or Home depot too and even just use ugly tinted paint. that would save money too and work just as well. good luck

Kilz Original stain blocker is an effective treatment that totally kills all odors. Granted it is very strong smelling but it effectively killed all of the odors when I recently pulled up carpet. I was told it was the only method that destroyed the smell permanently. And the smell when the carpet was pulled up was horrible. The problem is that dogs have such incredible noses that unless you destroy the smell of urine completely they will pee again on the hardwood which you definitely don't want. Using Kilz stopped my dogs from urinating in the house. What a relief. Good Luck.

As long as the sub floor is in good shape simply spray a enzyme type product as suggested let dry. Then use a oil based primer to seal the wood. will not be an issue. If the sub floor has any decay, remove it and replace. May be the best way to do this anyway., plywood is low cost and easy to do. Just be sure to screw it down using contractor adhesive and allow about a 1/16 inch space around it to the original wood so it does not squeak.

The Kilz dries in the same time as paint does- it goes on like paint. Granted it isn't "green" but it definitely permanently destroyed any pet odors which also helped eliminate future pet problems. The smell from the Kilz product totally dissipated after a couple of days. Enzymes work great but not if an area has already been treated with something else. Good luck.

There is a product you can order online called DoodooVoodoo It is the only prt odor remover Inhave used that actually works to permanently remove odor. I recently used it when I removed carpet and installed new flooring. You can use it on fabric, wood, concrete, any surface. I have used it for years

When I moved into a house I had similar problems renting a floor sander and working after that I used tsp trisodium phosphate ( available at a hardware store works very well for cleaning the stains with numerous applications let floor dry and spray on areas that are bad
