Giving an Old Rope Trimmed Desk a Makeover
I took a very old desk that was in terrible condition and used a lot of TLC to bring it back to life without losing its vintage charm.
Here is the before of the desk. It was in terrible condition. The feet were not attached and two of the drawers were stuck shut. I glued/hammered back in the feet and sanded back the piece to create a smooth surface.
Here is the before of the top. It was deeply stained and scratched.
Here is the after! I used Annie Sloan chalk paint in Old Violet. The piece was sanded back for a super smooth finish and waxed for durability.
The top refinished and stained in Minwax Early American Stain. I applied two coats of the stain. The wood grain is stunning. For protection, I applied Minwax Wipe-On Poly.
I sanded back the rope trim and added stain to create a two-toned look. It really gives the piece style! The original drawer pulls are made of wood and I lightly brushed the paint over them to pull out the details.
The back of the desk is lovely with paneled details and the feet (after I reattached them) are also so pretty with a slight curve to them.
The drawers have a curve to them and give the piece vintage style.
