Pam, check out this article I wrote on networx...it covers some flooring option for outdoor spaces. http://www.networx.com/article/flooring-options-for-outdoor-living-room
  • Pamela, you mean you want to DIY the patio yourself? It may not be impossible but it sure is a lot of work. I think the best is using Pavers, they are easy to install but the can be a cumbersome process. See this paving project by Paul R, he had his son help him with this project. http://www.hometalk.com/activity/47243
  • ALWAYS start with a good foundation. The extra work will pay dividends later. Whatever the material, get a good foundation, and make sure you know how deep the frost line is in your area to avoid any heaving of the patio down the road from freezing.

If you never build a pation deck before, you might want to get a book that has step by step directions. Usually at Home Depot or Lowes there is a book section that deals with deck building. C.R. Draves

Pamela- It can be done DIY, but the most important step is grading/leveling the ground. Once that is done, the hardscape can be laid relatively easy. Maybe you could hire someone to get you a nicely leveled base and then attempt the install yourself. GOOD LUCK!!

89 stone provides a good base for pavers, if that's the route you decide to go. It's easy to compact and provides excellent drainage.
