Has anyone painted an outside wood fench white?

I like the look of white vinyl outdoor fences, but not the cost. Had anyone painted a wood fence white? What kind of paint, durability etc

  • Wood fences are painted white all the time. Its a bit of a project, but it can be done. Depending upon the condition of the current fence, you will most likely need to power wash it. The patina that develops on unfinished wood will prevent the new paint from soaking it and properly bonding. You will need a few coats also. A good quality primer first followed by a good quality house paint is in order. Do not waste money on the prime and paint combo paint for this type of project. If the wood is treated, you will see that over time that the paint will begin to peel, This is from the chemicals that prevent insect and rot causing bonding issues. This type of fence tends to have a green tint to the wood if your not sure. But like any wooden house you will need to repaint it to keep it fresh looking every five or so years. A light power wash in the spring will keep it looking fresh. Just do not use to much power or you will remove the finish causing you to have to paint it again. You can spray it on, but do so in a non windy day. The paint will travel to everything including your neighbors black auto. If you understand what I am saying. Place a drop cloth on one side to keep the spray from blowing between the boards, You can also use a garden sprayer to apply the paint. Followed by a brush or a roller depending upon the type of fence it is that you have. Or simply roll and brush the paint on. In my opinion that's the best method as it pushes the paint into the wood where spray simply coats over the top. Future coatings then can be sprayed on however.

My house is surrounded by white rail fences and also entrance at the top of the drive. I find a semi-gloss house paint the easiest to use and it.s reasonably long lasting, 3/5years depending on climate. Happy painting!,
